What sort of discounts are you being offered? Is it just on the petrols or the diesels as well?

not 100% sure, the touring is not that big in the back - plus the dealer had a black m sport saloon parked next to it which looked a million times better...

that said the alpina d3 is now available as a touring for £28,500 and looks v nice

Touring / Saloon - surely this is driven by your own requirements? If you don't need the hatchback, then no question go for the saloon. I've done some mileagein both 330d saloon & 330d touring recently, and the saloon was definately a better drive - just that little bit more composed, specifically the rear end felt better tied down and more controlled. Spec? I'd go black / tan - here's a picture of the 330 saloon I I drove which was black, looks good IMHO:

Options: I'd expect it to be loaded but anyway: satnav essential, sport seats may be desirable, M sport will give the wheel / seat / steering wheel package. Avoid crass wood trim inside. One dilema may be auto/manual - I really dont like auto's in general but the 335i coupe I had was equipped with the latest generation 6spd auto and it was frankly stunning - instantly responsive, blipped downchanges, holds gears when cornering hard, paddle shift just fantastic - point is I feel that this box may actually suit the character of the engine better than the manual. I got a respectable 23mpg given the way it was driven.......

^ ^ ^ What Trackdemon says....

Dark colour, dark interior and none of that bright wood trim. Satnav is good, but was chatting to a car salesman the other day and he said that there is an increase in the number of cars they sell with satnav, but some of the more astute buyers are going for the decent spec and using a TomTom or similar - so might not have such a big impact. The problem with Audi / BMW and Mercs are their satnavs are good but not really worth the £2000 they want for it!

Decent stereo with CD and the M-tech kit is about it. You can get very silly with the options but I guess the Bluetooth preparation, arm-rest, xenon lights and metallic paint are the only real essentials. The 335i comes pretty well equipped so you get all of the aircon, PDC, ABS, DSC etc as standard. So its just a choice down to if you want heated front windscreens or tinted back windows..... which are two things that I am not really sure about...

Heated seats - forgot about that one - buggers make you pay for those dont they! My older BMW doesn't have them and boy does it feel cold in the mornings at the moment!

Manual/Auto is personal preference, less important on a 3. Options: Adaptive xenons, Auto Dimming Int+Ext mirrors, Nav Prof, Rear Side Airbags, 6CD.

Depreciation will be pretty hefty imo.

it will be if you go mad on spec for sure, i thought about the xenons and then thought for £550 odd quid i could have a sunny week away

besides i got a massive discount which will offset some of the depreciation

From my experience it seams 12% is pretty readily available.

I got 12% on the 318i M Sport and I have been offered 12% today on the current model X5.

If I could fit the 2 dogs in a 3 Series Touring I would have one, but I don't think the boot is that big.

If a car is in plentiful supply and sat in the dealers or pre built (316i ,318i etc) or in run out mode (x5) then you will get a big discount - perhaps 12% even 15%+ on a runout X5.

Try that on a in demand model, e.g. new coupe, 335i, 335d etc and it wont happen.

Most dealers will offer nowt on some models (new coupe), 3-4%(some dealers on new coupe), perhaps 5-6% on a factory order or 10% if its sat in their showroom and approaching the 60 day point where they need to pay for it.

Occassionally you can beat the above figures
