Whilst sat in the X5 trying to pair the Bluetooth system to our mobiles I noticed that a warning message appeared which suggested that the Air Suspension was inactive.

I switched off the ignition and back on again and the message had gone. Is it something I should be concerned about or is it just that I was sat in the car with the ignition on for too long.

yeah it could be especially if the battery was getting low, if it comes up again get the fault memory read.

Ok,what you will find is you will get this message mainly when you first start the vehicle. It is not uncommon in X5.
The cause-what happens is all the control units on the vehicle go through a self check/pre drive check, this lasts for about 8 seconds(ish)-In this time all of the control units send a telegram to to general module or instrument cluster(master units)to say "yes we're here and alls well".

They all have to send this message within 8 seconds(ish)
If one fails to send out a telegram or has a fault then that system is listed in the check control.

The reason for the "self level inactive" telegram is quite simple-The self check time for the air suspension has been set to 10 seconds, this means,by the time it has checked itself and its ready to send its ok message its about 2 seconds too late.Because its late the general module thinks its faulty and flags up a message. The system still works fine though as there isnt really a fault.

There is a simple remedy for this, you need to book in with your nearest dealer..We can reset the time via our diagnostic equipment using a certain test module.
They will want to diagnose it first(check fault memory)which is the correct way to go about it.They will find that there is no fault in the memory which points straight to the above fault.

8/10 its the pre drive check time fault, the only other faults we get is water ingress to the boot well-gets into the control unit and the general module fails(rare though).

Ps. did you pair your phone ok?

Wow thanks blackspider, you are a mind of useful information.

Regarding the phones yes and no.

The Nokia 6230i eventually paired and connects. The Nokia N70 which I was told would pair, has paired but then will not connect.

Make sure you havent got too many text messages stored-the control bluetooth unit only has a small flash memory and will reject the phone as it tries to connect.
I have tried several of the latest Nokia's out of 3 N70's only one worked and you could only dial a number and recieve calls-no phone book etc.The others like yours paired but that was it.They arent compatable im affraid.
BMW no longer test with Nokia-they tend to use sony, seimens, motorola.
When your at the dealer you can ask for the latest phone compatability matrix to see what will work...the 6230i is fully compatable
