Downsides:
Everyone will think it's a replica/fake (although this can be an advantage)
Insurance is normally very expensive (as they normally viewed as imports, and the £4000 wheels are desirable to tea-leaves)

Oh yeah, you'll never bother with another manufacturer, or indeed manual gearbox, again.
They're a slippery slope - three weeks into B3 ownership, you'll be trying to figure out how to afford a B5
I've come to the conclusion recently - having driven RS4s, CSLs, M5s, CLS55, and umpteen other things - that the only thing better than an Alpina is... another Alpina!!

Never driven one,always admired them,long gone are the days when i worry what people think of my car, M3 just too extreme for me nowadays (must just be getting old) plus them there performance figures do it for me!

Alpina is the path to BMW-based enlightenment and an altogether higher state of conciousness.
Which is a way of saying in the world of 3 series willy waving, you can be a touch arrogant with the Proles in their cooking BMWs
On serious note, as another Alpina owning chum of mine wrote yesterday - 'they (Alpina) rarely drop a bo**ock' - it'll be a serious bit of kit in other words

Alpina's are great cars.
I have visted Buchloe and had a guided tour of their factory (And their Wine Cellar), including an introduction to the technician that built my engine.
They are very proud of their motoring history (though they actually came into existence building type-writers) and do an awful lot of development for both BMW and other car makers. (Including the first steering-wheel based gear change on a production car for Porsche who subsequently bought the rights to develop it.)
They were also the first manufacturer to win a 24 hour race with a diesel engined car.
There are rumblings that a D5 might be in development ... I'll be one of the first in the queue.

The main problem is that they can only be sold new via sytner so you can't get dealers into a dutch auction by phoning round to try and get a bigger discount.
If you sell to any other BMW dealer they will value it as the closest BMW i.e B3 3.3's would get the same as a 330i sport/330ci sport.
The advantage is the uniqueness and they are different to //M product, I had a B3 3.4 Convertible for a month when I served my punishment at Sytners and enjoyed it but if it where my money i'd go for an M3 as I prefer the M3 as an overall package. I haven't had a try in the B5 but friends who have do say it is amazing along with the Z4 and D3, so I get the impression Alpina have moved along way since there E36/46 versions of the past that I have tried.
Nottingham is the Alpina head office so its the best place to go to attempt that dirty word 'discount'.

Took some photos up on the moors but 516ft/lb being loosed upon craggy, greasy blacktop, streaming from the precipitation is not a plan of sufficient cun for Mr Horatio Fox.
Nevertheless, I am starting to believe it is the most superb vehicle for luxuriant, real world sledgehammerwerk.
Quite joyous.
