Just how can a 120d be a BMW Wanabee .. it is a BMW .... have to say the 3 door is IMHO much nicer than the 5 door ... but the 1 series is a much better car post facelift and suspension update.

Intersting. I'm eligible for a subsidised lease car and a 120d is looking favourite. Logic being we can sell our 320d compact which the 1 series efeectively replaced.

I'm not a mega fan of the styling but when I can get one brand new, insured with full servicing and maitenance for c£130 (plus tax) pcm it's a tempting proposition, especially as the engines are so good. Our 320d has been brilliant and goes very well with the 'old' 150bhp unit.

Incidentally, anyone know why the 120d has a bit more grunt than the 320d? Is it just BMW trying to keep some space between the 320d and the 325d??

No it is just that they haven't as yet fitted the new engine to the E90/91. It is already in the coupe.

I believe it goes into the E90/E91 this September.

I've had an 120D Sport on loan for a week now while my CSL is having some warranty bits sorted out. I must admit to being a little bit disappointed when I was told that I was going to be getting a 1 series, I had been hoping for the 3 series coupe to try out.....but anyway, I have been impressed by the car. The performance is VERY usable, get's to 120mph without any fuss and I am even starting to quite like the looks. Oh, it's also averaging around 40mpg no matter how I drive it!

Go for it!

You need to drive one, I think the revised car is one of the best cars in the range. Fast, Fun and it's carbon skid marks are tiny biggrin

Many cars are better looking than the 1 series. Very good observsation indeed. You are obviously not blind.

However, unlike you some people buy cars for more than their looks. It sounds to me that you are actually a typical 'wannabe' car buyer as the looks seem to the most important thing! Luckily for you there are many tarted-up good-looking crap drivers cars out there for you to spend your money on.

Oh, and I'm very sorry too.

You drive a Ford Mondeo, and you thought this thread is a good place to praise it.

Saw the new Mondeo last week, what a terrible looking car, looks far to Amrican'esq for my taste. No doubt that it's a good car but hated the looks.

But I have to agree with Mondeoman that is a pretty good looking car and slighltly better than the 1 series, except for its fat rump.

Anyway, enough about Fords. What is it that makes the new 1 better to drifve than the old?

I think he needs to grow up, what a thing to say a 1 series isnt a bloody BMW. You may think that bringing the brand into a more affordable postion for a younger market isnt in your opinion best for BMW. But if you havent driven a 1 series esp the 120d then you cant make such a uninformed statement.

Also who are you kidding with the Mondeo being better looking than the current BMW's? I did like the old ST220 but the new one looks very soft. I havent seen the 3 door facelift model yet but will hope to get one when mines in for service.

I don't dislike Ford's in general, I have an '04 Focus as my daily driver and I'm very happy with it. But I personally thought the new Mondeo looked too large, huge rump, too much chrome and (to my mind) designed wholly to appeal to the American market. As I said, am sure it's a good drive, but I definitely prefer the looks of the 1 series - even if the two cars are chalk and cheese.

I took a 120d out today. Bloody hell - what an engine!

I have to say, I'm a bit surprised by the criticism of its ride - I was out in an SE spec car and was pleasantly surprised. It seemed to soak up the bumps quite easily. Rather more body roll than my Z4 - but that's to be expected.

I was truly amazed by the engine though. I'm looking for a new "every day" car (keeping the Z4 for weekends and holidays) and the combination of performance and economy of the 120d has sent it to the top of my wish list.

The next question is 3dr or 5dr? 3dr looks better (IMO) but the 5dr is much more user-friendly.

Also, has anyone tried the 118d? Is there much difference in real world performance? And I see they are both 2 litre engine - is the 118d simply the same engine with a detuned / different chip? If so, can it be DMS'd up to 120d performance??

DMS and other tuners will be unable to "chip" the latest 120d because BMW have put some encription in the ECU and it is "unbreakable"

I have a 120d 3 door and IMHO it looks fab in that form, the 120d engine is amazing I got 45 mpg on a high speed European trip , handling is great and the revised ride is fine be me
