Any BMW techs out there that can shed some light on this....

on a couple of occasions (since my CIP was updated about 4 weeks ago), the screen on my car has failed. When starting the car the screen stays blank, and remains blank (with the occasional grey flicker) until I turn off the ignition, wait for around 30 mins, then restart.

The engine will start and the car can be driven, but obviously non of the iDrive controls can be used. If I try to turn on the stereo by pressing the volume knob next to the in-dash cd player, this doesn't work either.

any ideas what is causing this? its a bit of a pisser setting off on a long journey without satnav or music.

to me it looks like the iDrive is failing to boot... does this sound possible?

Ok, firstly do you have business or professional navigation? Secondly what is the production date of your vehicle?
Must say the latest CIP version V26 is quite reliable, and I haven't heard of this fault affecting vehicles with this version, however i will check with BMW tommorrow for you.
Is the car still under warranty? Could a problem for a dealer to fix if so

I have seen a similar problem with the idrive not working/starting on a 6. This was due to the battery being low on charge, after charging everything was fine.

It's the professional satnav, with the car on a July 05 registration. The CIP upgrade was to 25.1 IIRC.

Not sure if it can be the battery as the car started fine....?

It's booked into the dealer, but if anyone has any more thoughts I'll pass them on (they've already replaced the screen).

any other ideas?

cheers,

My car has developed this fault also since my CIP was upgraded a few weeks back.

No voltage issues on my car as its driven 200 miles a day but on occasion I get the blank screen on start up.

Have you tried the master reset? Its similar to the Ctrl Alt Del procedure on your PC except you hold down the volume knob, CD eject, DVD eject simultaneously. Mine normally clears after this.

Dealer has been useless. It didnt do it when it went back to them and Ive got the most up to date CIP version so they just told me to go away and monitor it!!

Thanks Aero

I'll give the master reset a try next time it freezes. Maybe another CIP update will sort it out? We'll see if the dealer has any suggestions.....
