Need advice on E30 320I

Sorry for re-post, but Ladysmut said last subject headline was duff and I'm inclined to agree
I need an interim car from the time I sell my car until I purchase the next one. A mate of mine has the afore mentioned vehicle, I think its a 1989 for 200 quid. The MOT and tax is about to run out and has a cracked headlight.
Now, I am not mechanically clued up on these (or any cars) and I was wondering if the headlight is a MOT failure and if there is anything else to look out for. All the service lights are on and there is a CHECK light flashing when you turn the ignition on. I havent driven it yet, but from what I can see it looks pretty good (not too much visible rust and tyres are legal).
I would appreciate any advice at all. Cheers
