If you're going to spend 34k on a 4.8iS I suggest you first try a Cayenne Turbo for the same kind of money.

Putting aside the increased performance and handlng it feels a very special car. Every jouney is an occasion!

No big engined SUV (or "SAV" in the BMs case) is going to hold its value well in todays political climate, but its knowing that X5 values in partcular are in freefall now the new one is out. I lost 8k in 7 months on my 4.6iS a year or two ago. 4.8's will go the same way Im sure.

Tried the Cayenne & in all honesty as good as it is, it just too frigging ugly.

The car I've bought listed at 67k & its not 3 years old yet. I'm only paying 30k (ish) for it & there whats the worst it can do in the next 2 or 3 years. Even if it drops another 50% its still a bargain in my eyes.

thumbup

Leave it in Sport mode when you get it and get used to the fuel consumption. That way you'll love the performance and appreciate the decreased non-Sport consumption when you need to do motorway type runs.

I shall do.

Am taking it to Luton tomorrow (from Leeds), so will see what it does on the 'longer' journeys.

Can at least watch TV in the traffic jams hehe

Drove 32,000 miles in mine in just under a year.... (gulp)

All I have to say is what a car!

You'll enjoy the noise and the drive is fantastic. Fuel consumption averaged at 18.6 which is OK. In town you'll struggle to get mid teens and on a decent run the best I managed was 24 (but that was on a summers day, no air con and driving like a girl smile )

Front tyres were still from new at 35,00 miles and the rears lasted 22,000 miles. servicing costs are to be expected for that type of car.

I have driven other SUV's such as a Cayenne (which I happen to like) but the 4.8iS is the daddy!

Enjoy wink

Well. Picked it up. Just been from Leeds to Luton (and back). Averaged 21.9 mpg which isn't that bad.

Excellent bit of kit, only slightly let down by the gearbox at low speeds. It can't seem to decide which gear it wants to be in.

P!ssed off that the CD changer won't play CD's I burn myself as well. I'll have to start buying them again instead of downloading. Is there an ipod link available ?

Had a bit of fun with a couple of cars on the way back. Think it suprised them how quick it was (and me to some extent).

Cool, I was wondering whether we'd get an update. A bit more muted than I expected, I have to say though.

Looky here under STEREO for the iPod options - the Denison IceLink (or something) looks interesting. Considering doing it to mine.

I'd be concerned about the gear-box if I were you. I've had no similar problems with mine. Definitely keep an eye on it - though it might be a common thing on 4.8's. That link might help (wikipedia has a few links if you search on BMW X5).

Make sure you make full use of the Sport mode (like I do when freddies_mum and Freddie aren't in the car wink)

Don't think its a gearbox issue (cars under warranty anyway). Think its just that at the speed I was travelling it was wanting to change up & then when I slowed a bit it was wanting to change down. It was just not very smooth.

At decent speeds its excellent.

Will look into stereo system into a bit more detail. Might simply mean putting in a new autochanger which has an ipod link with it.

I really, really like it though yes

When I first got mine I was not too impressed with the gearbox, but over the miles (I did over 40k in mine) it quickly adapted to my style to the point that it was spot on for everyday driving (reasonably fast driving style) and auto/manual mode worked great for everything else. Just keep driving it how you like to in the relevant mode and the adaptive software seems to pick it up fairly well.

You can get an Icelink for the X5 (I had one and really liked it) but make sure you get the boot(trunk!) lead from the USA as it makes installation MUCH easier. alternatively, lots of people are saying positive things about the Intravee
