There are two audio upgrades available on the E90/91/92/93. The loudspeaker upgrade and the expensive Logic 7 (or DSP Pro as it is now know). I listen to a lot of bass heavy music and was wondering what people's experiences were with these systems. Is the loudspeaker upgrade (£390) enough or is it really worth the full L7 (£810)?

Hi,

I too listen to a lot of heavy bass music and went for the loudspeaker upgrade in my 335D Coupe. I have had no problems with the system yet and am very pleased with the music quality. I dont know how long you intend to keep your car for, or if you will be paying for it yourself or if it is a company car. I had to pay for mine myself and it will be changed next year so I really couldnt see the point in paying £800 for the Logic 7 upgrade, money you will not see on resale.

This is easy, the Logic7 (or DSP I think they now call it?).

BMW systems are.....

Head units

Business - Very basic, no MP3 playback, no info when using bluetooth
Proffesional - Made by alpine, nice sound for OEM, MP3 playback, OBC functions, Will display caller id and contacts for bluetooth.

Actual sound systems

Regular - All driven from the head unit, around 20wpc, only coaxial speakers fitted - two upfront and two in the rear - tiny 5" units under the seat as lower mids.

Hi-Fi - Speakers driven from an amp in the rear, this is sent over at speaker level and then an amp drives a two way speaker up front and rear with 40wpc into a mid range in the door and an extra tweeter in the A piller/door frame. 2 x 6.5" subs being driven at 50wpc udner the seat.

DSP/Logic 7 - Optical connection from head unit to rear amp, 70wpc into upgraded door speakers and tweeter and to 2 x 8" subs under the front seats. The rear also has the uprated speakers.

What to go for??

The basic system is terrible, but, you can add an aftermarket amp, some nice speakers up front and the subs from the L7 system for around £800-1000 and it sounds truly stunning! So if you feel you may like to upgrade go with this one.

The hi-fi system I wouldn't bother with, still not great, flabby bass and shrill midrange when you play it loud, and because it uses amps etc. and is now part of the i-bus system you can't upgrade it, take the head unit out or the amp and you have broken the cars network, you loose PDC, and the abaility for BMW to talk to the car.
You really need to make sure this will be good enough before speccing this system.

Logic7/DSP - This is the best in car system I haver heard to date, you would need to spend £1000 on aftermarket kit to better it, the amp has some real grunt to it, the subs under the seats work very well, and even the speakers are pretty good, it goes loud and never sounds shrill and the seperation is excellent.
I have this system with some upgraded tweeters in our 120d M-Sport, just added some silk tweeters to smooth things out even further, very impressed.
Again this is a mare to upgrade, part of the i-bus system, so you can't swap anything out, you could add a sub if you felt the need for more bass, but you can't swap head units or anything like that without runing into problems later. However I think most people would be more than impressed with this system.

Seconded.

I've got Logic 7 in my Touring and it's very good. Better than the BOSE in my previous Audi.

Takes some tinkering with to get it sounding good and the absolute quality depends from track to track.

But, find the right track and the right set up (I've only had mine a few days so far) and, as the previous poster said, it's very very impressive

I shall soon be in possession of a 6 month old E92 335d and I am doing a little research in advance on retro fitting a better OEM audio system as the car I have found was ideal apart from having the standard system. So I'd be very interested in people’s opinions on the Logic 7 upgrade or the Individual Audio upgrade which is even more advanced than the Logic 7 version.

Another aspect I've been trying to figure out is where the extra 3 speakers are located on the Individual system over the Logic 7's 13 speaker system. I figured there would be a 3way component system in the front door area so that takes two of the additional three speakers but that leaves me with one more which I can only think as being a tweeter for the centre speaker?

I know most will say that you can't retro fit either the Logic 7 or the Individual Audio systems but I'm sure it can be done with research, patience and time.

Absoultly agree with the above. Once I heard/felt the bass provided by the Logic 7 I decided it was a must. A huge improvment over the standard system

There are three, there is Individual Audio as well which is excellent but very expensive.
