So.. people seem to be leaning towards the 335d.. a couple of more questions...

1) what's the Auto box like? blip on down change & stuff or is it a constant torque thing like the Jag XK8/R? Flappy padals work well?

2) Sound.. does it still sound like a bag of spanners? smile

1) no real opinion there - I like auto over manual (it suits the type of driving I do these days) and the paddles are quite useful on the rare occasion I get the chance to overtake.

2) afraid so! I came from a TVR to an E46 330 to the 335d. It is a fantastic car just wish the exhaust note was more like the old 330. I guess there would be an after-market sports exhaust available? Is that possible for a diesel?
Disagree, only heard my 335d the once from the outside when someone else was playing in it and i thought it sounded rather nice!!

Nice in a sorta perverted sense, or nice in an Italian engine sense? wink

Oh another question on the D... do you get the humiliating black cloud out the back when you boot it like they used to? or is that all sorted now with magic filters & more accurate fueling these days.

Does anyone have details on 'chips' for both the D & the I? i'd be interested to see power, torque, 0-02 & 30-70 times.

No smoke from the d at all (dpf). Chipping widely available, I think on PH DMS is highly rated. For the 335i it is a bit harder. Believe in the UK you'll find brands that do it, in Germany many renowned chip tuning companies have withdrawn their products for the i, the reasons of why i am unsure about.

Hi,

I have a remapped 335d and have ran a coupe of different maps from the tuning companies.

The noise from the engine isn't particularly pleasent, but as diesels go it is pretty good, by this I mean it isn't too clattery and isn't as loud as most diesels. The ehxaust note on acceleration is pretty good for the type of car it is an from the outside you'd be hard pushed to tell if it was petrol or derv.

You do not get the black clouds of smoke due to the fitment of the "magic" filters...

My car does 0-100 in 11.9 seconds........I have also recently timed the 80-140mph on a private airfield as this was the topic of discussion on another thread and I was suprised to find that the car did it in 16 seconds (very slight uphill), I expected nearer to 18 so was pleased.

Power wise you'll see quotes of 340bhp ad 510lb/ft, experience shows that you'll probably get 320-335bhp and 480-500lb/ft which is still pretty good.

Tuners offering remaps are many but the most popular ones are:

DMS - www.dmsautomotive.com
E-Maps - www.e-maps.co.uk
Chipped UK - www.chippeduk.com

There are a few more such as the one JeffC on here uses (can't remember who though). Do your research on who you think are the best ones to go with, some offer better maps than others, some charge a little more than the others (£300 - £600), some will come to your house / work to install the map etc etc

I don't have much info on the 335i from a mapping perspective but believe that they can be remapped, but that there aren't many companies offering this yet. There is the option to fit a tuning box type system and this has seen good results.

Hope this helps.....email if you need any more info

Jules.

so does anyone have any knowledge/opinion on the sports exhaust option?

plus rather nice is not exactly a TVR rumble!

I had the Xede for my 335i and it became a seriously quick car, and I mean seriously quick.
Using an AP22 performance meter to time it it would do 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds, 4.498 if we want to be exact.

And that was with the first firmware version, which was around 365bhp, the newer one will see around 380bhp, not tried that.

So there are some good tuning options out there for the petrol.

Don't get me wrong I like the 335d, but I think I would now buy the latest 330i over one, that does see 38mpg no problem handles alot better and sounds fantastic.

I drove both back to back and admittedly found that the diesel 'appeared' quicker with its awesome torque. However, when I press that 'start' button - you want something explosive to happen - and the sound of a straight six (corrected) petrol engine is probably as explosive as it will get. That is why I ordered a 335i. For all my sins, ordered in automatic. If you are paying this much for a car - it's not such a great difference to pay a bit on fuel and now with the new 335i's, they come down to Group F VED.

but other than that, he is totally correct

every trip to the shops induces a grin in a 335i...I find myself trundling along in 2nd (or even 1st) just to hear it burble along in traffic

Does anyone have any experience of how a 335i sounds compared to an S5? I heard an S5 the other day and thought it was one of the best sounding cars I'd heard in a while. Not got my 335i yet so cannot comment.

Hi Alex,

Is your S4 mapped or modified (K04's etc?), if not then you'll probably find that the 335d / i are on a par with the i feeling quicker. If your S4 is remapped then you'll find the remapped 335d to be similar. I used to own a remapped S4 putting out 335bhp and 380lb/ft and it was very swift.....my remapped 335d feels just as quick if not a touch quicker....

just read in evo today that they've got some pretty major problems with their 335i fleet car... any known reliability issues here? I wouldnt have thought that the bhp/litre was pushing the envelope that much for the likes of BMW surely?

not really major problems - wasn't the diagnosis a blown turbo?

no known problems in so far as I know

335i sounds awesome...burbles below 3k, roars up to 5k, howls above it...

I've been perusing the websites for AC Schnitzer and Hartge over the weekend... certainly seem to be plenty of goodies available for these cars (LSD being a good one!); anyone know these tuners?
