My father's 2001 530d estate decided to empty the contents of its sump down its exhaust pipe the other night whilst he was cruising down the M6. No lights came on beforehand, hence no warning. He pulled over asap and turned it off.

It started again on the key, but apparently, then the dash lit up like a christmas tree.

It was recovered and is being disassembled as I type.

As you can imaging he is ready for setting fire to it, especially after spending £2k 12 months ago on a new gearbox!

His comment to me on the phone was "Ithought these things went on forever?" and I must admit that I have never read anything about these 3.0l turbo diesels blowing their head gaskets in this way and certainly not in a way that pressurises the oil system such that it makes a sharp exit down the exhaust, to the detriment of all of the hot moving metallic parts inside?!

Anyone heard of this before?

Is it headgsket though? Turbo failures on these are apparently common.

Turns out to be the turbo - seals failed and sucked all of the oil out. Once stopped the oil continued to flow into the bores and so when he tried to start it back home (having been recovered) having filled it up with oil again (!), the hydraulic effect of the oil in the cylinders stopped it turning over, but apparently no damage to the internals.

Surprise, surprise though, BMW main stealer would like to replace intercooler, inlet manifold as well as turbo, whereas local indie will clean intercooler out and inlet manifold and install recon turbo for 1/3 of the stealer price!!!

Apprently car has been started now (minus turbo) and it sounded very sweet according to the indie, so my dad has climbed back down off the bridge parapet.....!

No warning signs to show the turbo was on the way out though - car has done 120k miles, with fully synthetic oil changes every 6k

Cheers
Nick

to be fair i think its done well, 120k at turbo running temps and conditions is good and i also think that at 120k miles its acceptable to have to replace one, no car goes on forever without needing parts changed due to wear and tear, and anyone expecting a car to do so is stupid, not saying that whats you were expecting it to do.

I agree - at that mileage, parts will require replacement, sooner or later.

I was, however, concerned at how it failed and the fact that potentially you could end up with an empty sump and siezed engine if you weren't on the ball.

This happened at night and in the rain, so at first, he thought it was just spray behind...

Thanks
