Wow, almost opened the 'M badge wker' can of worms here! If BMW want to stick M Tech on various lines of cars, thats up to them and its clearly been a marketing success. I do tend to think they've gone a little overboard though. I'll just have to stick with my 0-60 of 4.5 secs and a torque figure of 650Nm as I consider my inferior brand new car. The whole M Car snobbery is a bit bizarre at times. True, when you see a 120d plastered in them or an old E36 316 dressed up to look like an M3 it is a little sad.
I actually chose not to buy an M4 and decided to buy the 435d XDrive instead (full M package brakes and suspension with AC Schnitzer coils). Simple choice of all round realistic performance on a day to day level added to better economics with only a slight degrade on usable performance. 4x4 is breathtaking with launch control, torque is astounding, handling is sharp. Tie that to 42mpg, cheap insurance and road tax of about £140 and the difference of 0.4 secs on the 0-60 becomes insignificant. After remap, 750Nm of torque and a 0-60 of 4.0.
Some see getting a 'proper M car' as the pinnacle but in the real grown up world, getting a potent useable car that doesnt have some of the vices of an M defeats the snobbery.
So if you would like to be a snob when you pull up next to me in an ageing M car, please phone BMW and complain. We can race between petrol stations and cash points

It was just the front grill badge I had an issue with, none of the rest. You have a very nice looking car with good performance and economy to boot, you should be happy. However I hate seeing non factory M badges on non M cars. I actually chose not to buy an M4 and decided to buy the 435d XDrive instead (full M package brakes and suspension with AC Schnitzer coils). I don't want to start an argument as the 435D is no doubt a great car, however even with ACS springs they just aren't comparable to an M car.

But defensive of your fake badge don't you think? I actually chose not to buy an M4 and decided to buy the 435d XDrive instead (full M package brakes and suspension with AC Schnitzer coils). If you think your non-m diesel is better than an 'M', why add the front badge afterwards?
I also have an M Sport BMW diesel - which I'm very fond of - but I'd never dream of saying it has 'Full M package suspension' as that implies some sort of relationship to that found on the M5. In reality it's got lower springs and different dampers over an SE.
I've got the same engine and gearbox as you (Albeit with one less turbo) and agree - the performance, drive ability and brilliantly way it blends this performance with palatable running costs is fantastic and means I definitely prefer the idea of running it to the idea of running an M5.
I have also had the pleasure of driving an M5 and it was absolutely in another league in every possible way. So rather than pour scorn and try and compare mine to the genuine M cars, I simply admire them when I see them about and respect the fact that in probably no other marque can two cars look so similar and yet be so different. I have nothing but respect for those true petrolheads who pick an 'ageing M car' over a newer diesel M Sport. I don't have the stones to do it, but I'm glad they do, as should any car enthusiast.
Because lets face it - if suddenly money wasn't an issue at all, we'd all drive the M car, wouldn't we?

Quite amusing when the M knitting circle starts clucking.....
I honestly couldn't care less (all I said was I wouldn't personally out them on) but it's quite fun to see the defensiveness of a diesel commuting (that's all it is) car come out when compared against an actual M Genuine question, why add the m badge? I'm genuinely curious.

It's not often I find myself agreeing with you... but I REALLY want an M4 I've got the same engine and gearbox as you (Albeit with one less turbo) and agree - the performance, drive ability and brilliantly way it blends this performance with palatable running costs is fantastic and means I definitely prefer the idea of running it to the idea of running an M5.

Exactly and if money wasn't an object I wouldn't be running a 640d with all its dieselness short comings, I'd be running a M6. You just can't compare the two and surely the only reason you run a diesel is for the cost savings.
It's not often I praise M cars but for me a 435d can't be compared to a M4, likewise a 640d is nothing like a M6.
My heart sinks everytime I start the 640d up...I don't think I'd feel like that with the M6 that's for sure.

That's not really fair either - if that's really all it is then it'd be a 320d. The performance of a 435xd surely puts it beyond the realms of just being a 'diesel commuting car'.p1stonhead said:
I'd still say that's where it would be used 90% of the time. Where else would you use it? I wouldn't ever dream about taking something like that out for a drive for the sake of it or take it in track. I have a 325d which whilst slower, is probably the same dynamically and it is ok but I'd never go for a fun drive in it.
I doubt most M cars are used mostly for aimless fun drives either though.Fox- said:

But isn't this just what you've done by adding an '///M' grill badge to your car? You've acknowledged that they are a successful marketing tool so I wonder why and what you are marketing by adding to the number and visibility of marketing badges around your car?E24man said:
We bought a 435xd Cabriolet MSport as a diesel commuting tool.
Why didn't you buy a 320xd saloon instead? Because it isn't really 'just' a commuting tool and you'll get more out of it than just the daily grind to work and back, hence your decision to opt for the powerful cabriolet Gassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
