Fuel consumption - unless doing big ish miles isnt really an issue however the surge in acceleration from 1000rpm is really nice and it has a long 1st gear unlike VAG TDI's

My last 4 tanks have taken me around 2000 miles at between 47 and 48MPG in the 120d. Official combined figure is 49MPG so what's the problem. MPG is calculated from what's gone in the tank although I find the OBC to be pretty accurate on this BMW.

Well you need to calculate what % of your driving is urban what is extra urban & what is A/B roads if it is more squewed towards the Urban than the official Govt route then of course your never going to achieve the official combined as remember it is an average.

One thing though if you reset the trip and you have the engine up to temps and your on the M way at 70mph in 6th you should easily see 60+mpg if not then tyres are too low, tread too low, blocked injector (evident with a lot of black smoke). If you dont take it to the garage as there is something wrong with it. If it does however then its purely your dirving style &/or the % of your time you spend driving in Urban vs extra urban
There's nothing wrong with the car and I'm quite happy with the consumption. Most of my driving is either blatting down motorways or sitting in urban traffic jams. The combined fiqure is the most likely to be achieved in real world driving. I've seen 72MPG on the OBC on a 100 mile trip down the motorway to home when on an economy mission.

Chris

I bought Ex Demo 123d 3door Hatch M sport in December. - Black, cream Leather, Blue tooth, elec mem seats, full sat nav, hifi speaker system, Upgraded 18's. The Lot.

It had 4500 miles on it when i got it, and now has near 12k. It is Marvelous!!

Had a 118d previously, which was a tad sluggish, but i suppose that i have best part of an extra 85 ponies now! DMS cant chip it sadly, as the ECU is encrypted, however the fuel economy is only a tad shy of th 118d.

On my 30 mile slog to work in the 118d i was returning circa 34mpg (Cross country driving, in as little time as possible - save traffic!) and in the 123d im getting about 31mpg doing the same trip.

Christmas morning was however very fun, the max i could get out the 118d was an indicated 129mph. The 123d, sat poised and went all the way upto an indiacted 154mph on an empty major A road. (Was only returning approx 14mpg that morning!)

The car is awesome, best ive had, just wish that DMS could crack the ECU encryption and see what they can get out of it. Im sure that 250bhp is within reach, especially as the Alpina D3 with the single turbo 2.0d is now 200bhp or thereabout, and they are launching the twin turbo lump with 215bhp later this year.

The only question is, what do i buy next?!!!!

A truly fantastic car, highly reccomended, only problems i have had is with the DVD unit for sat nav disk being a bit tempremental, but that seems to have resolved itself. I Think worth every penny over comparable VAG derv's!

There's a fella on www.babybmw.net with a 123d running at 265bhp. Have a scout over there for methods of achieving that.

Would you agree the only issue with it is its high price?

New - Yes! - There is no way i would have paid new list price for the spec of car i bought at Around £32-35K ish, However, as I said, as an ex-demo and paying around £25k for it, it was still expensive, but what were my alternatives for the budget, in hot-hatch dervs? - None! Could have bought 325d Saloon? 320d Coupe? ummm Merc? (Im 25 not 52!) Audi? - The car is the most powerful small diesel around, and to top it off, RWD.

The best thing about the car i bought is that BMW launced the car with some packs available to get the spec i got, which were very cheap at the time, so it was probably only something like £30kish new, They have since withdrawn the packs as they realised they weren't making enough money!!

What else could i have bought for my £25-6K?, what else would fit the bill considering i do 35k a year, reliable, comfortable, quick, and handles?

Looked at A4 Cabrio - and S3(which were both dissapointing to drive comparably)

I've just ordered one without driving it first. D'oh. I don't think it's expensive, as there's no cheaper car with that sort of power and drivetrain for high miles (>20k/yr). I've haggled a bit, and the price works out at 0.18€/km including services, all repairs, courtesy car, depreciation. That's what VW asked for a 105PS-Golf Tdi rolleyes

With less than 10k mls/yr, you'd be in 6-cylinder-land for that sort of monthly total cost though.

I didn't drive it first either, and it was ex-demo physical car - dont know why, guess i knew it would be good. My other half is in sales at the dealership, so she had driven one already and said how great they were.
