I want a BMW =D

Sick of my current car.
Been looking at the 3 series and have about £2k maximum to spend. What can you guys suggest for me? was looking at 318i about the 10 yr old mark is there something better I could aim for though?
What kind of mileage and things can i expect of a 10 yr old 318?
ETA: a diesel might be good but was told they are less reliable.

Mileages could vary quite considerably from car to car. Go for one with less owners and more service history even if it has more miles than the next car with less hitory.Been looking at the 3 series and have about £2k maximum to spend. Carlos
I bought a 10 year old 318Ti Compact for £2k. Had 101k on the clock, 2 owners, FSH, had been factory specced with a sports exhaust and has M-styling (gearknob and steering wheel), had tax and MOT until August this year too.
I like it. They're much better cars than people give them credit for - quite nimble, quicker than the 0-60 figures suggest, can carry 4 people quite comfortably and have a decent-sized boot. Economy is reasonable too: I get about 300 urban miles to a tank.
I'd buy another one, although £2k gets you a 328i nowadays, if you look hard enough and aren't bothered about it being slightly ropey.

The only issue you might have is fuel consumption, i usually get about 28 mpg on mixed driving.
For the money there great cars, i went from a 3 year old 2 litre Focus to the BM and loved it, great rwd handling, cheap to run and reliable, only selling mine as i need an estate car.
If fuel ecomony is an issue i'd recommend a 318is, the 140 bhp Coupe which should get mid to high 30's, handle really well as they have 4 cylinders instead of the 6 of the bigger engined cars.
Have a look on e36coupe.com for more info.
Thanks

and PM is on its way
Is MPG a big concern to you?
Many people claim the 328i is as good on fuel as most of the others, as it doesn't have to struggle to shift the weight of the car.
You should be able to find a decent enough 328i for £2k - at this age always buy on condition and history over mileage.
And then enjoy it!

not a concern at all but being 19 with only 1 year NCB its tough to get insurance at a price im willing to pay,Many people claim the 328i is as good on fuel as most of the others, as it doesn't have to struggle to shift the weight of the car.

atm £1200 on a 320i coupe seems reasonable to me and cheaper than the bloody 306 i have atm is. did a quote on a 323 and it was about 2k which i dont want to pay i can only imagine a 328 being alot more as it has more horses. might do a quote if i run out of work to do later =p
Anything from the 320 upwards is a 6 cylinder and are the engines to go with.
Being 19 you may want to tweak the engine a bit at some point and the 4 cylinder engines are pretty lifeless and do not respond to performance upgrades well.
From what I've read the 325 is the best all round engine with the 328 being the daddy for performance and power.
Like the others are saying go for a well looked after and serviced original one rather than an M3 wannabe. For 2k you should be able to find a nice one with all the toys like climate control, leather and the full OBC. I was told to avoid autos as they are sealed for life and not easily fixed if you have a problem.
Last month I bought a 94 320i and couldnt be more pleased with it, plus my insurance was cheaper than my old Rover 45 so it was a bonus.

get a 328i coupe. i wouldnt scrimp and pay £1000 a good 328i non sport can be had for £1500 to £2000. these are much more likely to have been looked after.
www.e36coupe.com is a good place to source a car, these people generally look after the cars well and put a lot of care into them - much more likely to get a mint one.
i would seriously doubt you will get a sport for less than £2k that isnt pretty rough. i saw a good looking one for £1995 but after driving it it was clear it had had a hard life and been involved in a big crash at some point.
318is are good but a bit boring imo. if u can afford a 328i do that, they are 193bhp, very torquey and very quick, you should still get 25+ MPG.
try and get the newest, best example you can afford, generally cheap ones are cheap for a reason.
regarding mileage i would not worry too much, these will go on if looked after. FSH is more important, it is pretty easy to tell if it has been looked after or not.
and if you do get one watch that back end, I know of LOADS of people's whose 328is have come to a sticky end on a greasy roundabout and an over zealous right foot its so easy to do!
ps. take us for a spin when you get it

tbh 328 wont use that much more fuel that a 320 prob 2-5mpg if that id say. regarding tax fk it your lucky you will be having a pre 2001 car where tax is currently £101.75 for 6mths for any car over 1.4 litre (i think). a 318i, 320i, 323i, 328i will all be same tax band as before it was not done on emmissions.
