Ive recently bought myself a 1994 316 coupe. Everythings fine with the car except every now and again when I put the clutch down (either to change gear or stop at lights) the revs shoot strait up to 2000rpm or higher and then go back to normal when I engage gear and set off! I took it to a local garage and they changed the thermostat but the problem still hasn't gone. The only modification it has on the engine is an aftermarket air filter. Could this be the problem? Does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers

sounds to me like the engine idle sensor which i think is a common fault

Try unplugging your Air mass meter connector. Let the car warm up and go for a drive, on return to idle if it carries on thats the fault. After that, im out of ideas. A mate of mine had similar fault. Hope this helps!

Could give you ICV a clean as well, sometimes causes similar symptons

I had it on my 318is and turned out to be the snorkel to the AFM. Had a hole in it.

Unfortunately that was caused by shot engine mounts and the movement of the engine, so needed to replace them as well.
