BMW wouldn't make it if people didn't want it - perceived safety in case of accident/rollover etc...

Agreed!

There was a time, some years ago now, when Audi and Mercedes and other people were using more turbos and superchargers, that BMW said it would never use turbos for its performance cars .....

I expect we will see a lot more turbo cars since they are supposed to be more fuel efficient. In practice they probably do better in the CO2 and official fuel consumption tests but no better or maybe even worse in real use.

I seem to remember a BMW ad from the 80's for one of its high performance models which stated that the car needed a turbo like Concorde needed a propellor. Anyway, all BMs are ugly these days, IMHO.

I bet there'll be a diesel one. Or possibly two - 123d/335d engines.

Which was long after General Motors pioneered road-going turbocharged cars in the early 1960's with the Chevrolet Corvair and Oldsmobile F85.

According to other reports, such as the one in Autocar, the M version of the Z4 will use the M3's naturally aspirated V8.
