Ed, did you get this problem sorted? If so what was causing it?

FYI mine was the membrane.

I dared to put mine into a main dealer recently for an inspection II - as I am working on contract right next to the place - and had them replace the membrane at the same time. Talk about getting my trousers pulled down.

You may also have a blocked drain in the bottom of the door which is allowing water to build up putting more pressure on the membrane. The drain can be cleared with a stiff bit of wire but it clogs repeatedly you may need to remove the door card to extract the debris
I opened my rear passenger door today to find just this - water build up on the outside of the door the outside side of the door seal, so not leaking into the car yet. Is this a blocked drain? Where is the drain? My car has no sunroof.

Thanks!

The drain holes are at the bottom of the doors one at either side.
You also need to remove the rear door panel and check the membrane is sealed correctly. Had this issue a few weeks ago,
also check the 2 round plactic coveres are in place on the bottom of the door, there about the size of a 20 pence coin
