Indeed, because you get the soundtrack and linear delivery, both of which are great when pushing on and enjoying driving fast in the first place.I won't pretend diesels can't be good, but NA petrol's are better for 'driving'
A fast diesel won't be any more fun than it was before... just faster.

I went from an E36 328 to an E46 320td compact which I had mapped and wasn't disappointed - at all!
Yes, a wrung out BMW 6 is sonorous, but huge slugs of torque are addictive too, as are the priceless looks on the faces of cars disappearing in the rear view mirror (in a cloud of soot)!
I would be happy to take a few of the sceptics (Dave) out for a spin in the 320d or the 530d!

Oh I by no means don't believe they can be fun in different ways, and they are brisk enough... big power low down is also hugely amusing sometimes, overtaking and slip road antics are quite amusing without having to touch the gearstick. Going faster on it's own is not that much more fun in itself. If the OP decats it, adds a fruitier exhaust, a bigger intercooler so it doesn't soak up when run hard with higher boost, and maybe some BMW M brakes and so on, then great, you gain response, sound, a bit better stopping power etc... they all improve the feel and enjoyment.
But just a remap won't, imho, make a car more fun in itself. Faster yes, some thrills from that (maybe fun I guess), but over time you get used to it. There is never that giddy race to the redline and limiter through each gear revelling in the induction blare of your engine... which for plenty is what 'driving' is all about.
Day to day, the grunty diesels can be silly, I love just smearing rubber down in 4th gear off roundabouts at this time of year, because it just does, or tear arsing it up slip roads without dropping a few gears etc, but for a true blast out on a Sunday morning?
330Ci or 320Cd remapped? I know which I'd be taking for a Sunday hoon!
Also, by and large, once you've spent money making the diesel as good as the petrol equivalent in as many ways as possible, it's often cost as much as the petrol would overall too...

As said, not saying the diesels are crap, or lacking, just next to sporty petrols they have their work cut out.
It's taken a great deal of time and money to get my diesel 306 near to the petrol one I had for power and response... it is now tons better. Infact 90% of the time I prefer it to the petrol one. Just that 10% of the time when you got it to 7250rpm in each gear out to 100mph, the GTi6 was just smiles from ear to ear... in the diesel doing the same leaves you quite impressed, it's not dull, but it just doesn't make you smile and keep wanting to do it again and again.
Can't put my finger on it... I guess it's what you like. Day to day a diesel does me fine, out on a spin you can't beat the extra involvement that comes from higher engine braking torques/response on the chassis through throttle adjustments and so on... they can just feel so much more alive when being really used, and that makes them more enjoyable to be used thus, and so you do it just for the fun of it

I've got a superchips map and there's a very noticeable improvement IMHO. Torque is much higher across virtually the whole rev range, top end rated power from 150 (6 speed model from Feb 04) to 180 ish if you read the blurb (lots of optimistic claims out there) ... but it's the torque that matters.chris
It spools up lower in the revs, feels very strong through the powerband (which does still tail off towards 4k) and the economy actually improves quite a bit if you do long motorway schleps.
No adverse effects for me either and yes, the dealer still honoured warranty work on the car during the warranty period.
p.s. Bought the car with 12k and it's now about 84k miles (and still for sale)!

Sounds good... Celtic tuning who are coming to re-map mine say that bhp will go up to 200 and torque to 324LbFt.. so will let you know what sort of difference that will make lol. gonna get it dynod then to see what the old girl is realy putting out.

Celtic make up their bhp figures imho.
Even the dyno's on their website prove it, with drivetrain losses shed loads higher than you'd expect.
Their @ wheels figures are about spot on, just their inflated flywheel figures make them look more impressive than they are.
Still not bad though, just take 5% from their figures
