I run a fleet of 730d, the average across them is 31.7mpg. My 745s used to be 22.8mpg.
What are the outliers (best/worst you've seen)?

My own experience of a couple of weekends in a 730d gave about 35mpg which was mostly long runs with a bit of town driving either end of the journey.

The ones that work central/city of London are normally high 20s, on a long run they will give 38/40ish if using cruise.

High 20s sounds excellent for city work considering it's a two ton auto monster.

Is cruise efficient? I always thought it robbed an mpg or two.

Just to get a feel for the diesel economy saving, I estimated some figures for the 730D and 745i based on 10k miles a year (which is, of course, what the OP actually said):

730D, 40mpg average, £1.00/litre: £1,136.50 per year.
745i, 25mpg average, 90p/litre: £1,636.56 per year.

So £500 per annum, or just over £40 a month, is the difference. And that's based on optimistic consumption for the diesel and being generous on the fuel price (diesel's at least 12p/litre more expensive wherever I go currently), so the real difference will be smaller.

For the extra performance, initial cost saving and V8 engine, £40/month is well justified in my view.
I run a fleet of 730d, the average across them is 31.7mpg. My 745s used to be 22.8mpg.
Cheers - based on the same fuel prices (which are overly generous to the diesel), that's £1434 p.a. for the 730d and £1794 p.a. for the 745i. £30 a month difference...

I did the same exercise for my mum when she was looking at X3 3.0Ds and X3 3.0is - the petrol made sense given the mileage she does but she preferred the drive of the diesel auto so ignored me advice!

Looks like a 745i is the way forward if I go down that route. 745i + Elise or 335i? Hmmmmm

Yup, when I had the an Audi company car choice I went for the diesel before looking at costs as I though it was the best 4-pot between the two.

As for your 745i + Elise or 335i dilema - it's a nice problem to have

I know which way I'd go!

Has to be 745 + Elise.

The 335i is just a nice motorway mile muncher, if it was one car it would have to be an M3 not a 335i.

I have been sorely tempted by reading this....

About 6weeks ago, there were a few 745 beamers on ebay for around £6500 (2002 plate). Now they seem to be up near the £8000 mark.

Where are all the cheapo ones? Or have I missed the boat? I am looking on autotrader, ebay and pistonheads. Anywhere else people can recommend?

All the cheap ones have presumably broken down or exploded. Never, ever buy a car like this from the absolute bottom of the barrel. It'll cost you lots more than a good one in the long run.

Blimey, this is a long thread for a luxobarge. I still stand by by option on page 1 of getting the 745i (for a lot less than a diesel) and fitting LPG. Equivalent mpg will then be 40+, better than the diesel and you've still got a V8. Sorted.

By the way i also have an E90 330i and i do find it a bit odd that a motoring magazine has never bothered to test properly what is probably the best allround engine currently in production. I think they may have tested one as part of a 'handling' test once a few years ago with loads of other cars, but thats it, odd.
