Improving 3 series lighting

I find that the headlights in my 2008 3 series are poor to the point of dangerous. With hindsight I should have ordered the xenons but I've never experienced the need in other cars.

Are there any legal and non-warranty voiding options to improve them?

I'm sure Pillips and others make bulbs that are supposed to be 70-90% brighter than standard. Should be a cheap remedy.
