My friend has a BMW and we currently can't figure out the problem so here's what we know, its a 1992 318i it will start but once a load is put on it, it stutters and won't go over 1500 rpm so any ideas on what could be the problem?

Not much to go on here, but I'd start looking at a clogged fuel filter, blocked injectors or a dodgy fuel pump...

Could be any of the above. Also check MAF and Cam position sensor.

I was thinking something to do with the fuel filter as well but as for the pump I don't understand what could be wrong with it possibility of something clogging it? and the car only has 75xxx miles on it so I didn't think the pump would already be going out and that's about all the info I can give if you have any ?s I could answer them

if the brushes in the motor are worn, it could conceivably operate slower than it should, this results in lower fuel pressure, and starvation when you accelerate

there is probably a schrader valve on the fuel line to connect a pressure gauge to, checking the fuel pressure is a must.

My '96 MX5 had a similar issue soon after I bought it.

New spark plugs and HT leads sorted it. Cheap fix and only took half an hour.

I had a Golf Gti with same problem, new rotor arm, dizzy cap, leads and plugs fixed it.

OP, does the car shake/ run on fewer cylinders under load? Try running engine in the dark and look for arcing from leads.

I'm no tech but in my days of self servicing and fixing it was a rule that if it ran ok then misfired when under load it'd likely be the HT circuit. Fairly easy and cheap to eliminate, esp if it's not had leads, plugs etc for a while.
