Hi Folks,

Just been offered (over the phone, from the trade) what's described as a BMW 7 Series V8 Auto Alpina 'R' reg. Trouble is, I'm not even in the country at the moment (on hols in France) and wont be back for a week. It's well described from a good source I've dealt with before. I've asked is it a genuine Alpina but apart from saying it's got the fancy wheels and Alpina badges they don't seem to know (it's a part-ex). Whatever, the price seems too good to miss. I have to let them know by the morning so will be buying it completely 'blind'!

My question is, how does one tell a genuine Alpina from a dressed up fake? Will it say on the V5 for instance? I've never had an Alpina before and simply don't know! Can you help!

I would put money on it not being real - the actual B12's are worth a staggering amount of money.

Get on the Alpina forums and ask them to check the chassis number.

Yep, I'm full of suspicion - trying to get someone to look at it for me in the morning before I do something stupid! But it seems cheap!

Infact actually wasn't the only Alpina E38 a V12?

Making this one certainly a fake?

There was no V8 E38 Alpina, but there was a whole raft of Alpina add ons, so it might be a dealer car with Alpina wheels, body kit, suspension etc.

Guess that settles it - it's just a dressed-up old 7 series. Wonder if it's worth breaking? What's a set of Alpina wheels worth? Anyway, thanks for all the info guys - invaluable.

They aren't worth anything. Even James Bond couldn't breath any glamour into the old girl. It really was a very ugly clumsy design.

Wheels could be worth a bit, but as it's not a genuine Alpina, can you be sure without seeing it that they are genuine wheels and not reps?

Have put a silly bid in for it. Will find out next week when I get home if I've been lucky or not!

You have to have a punt from time to time!

Thats a very poor and misleading advert. Why have you advertised it as 'Alpina style'? What about is 'Alpina Style'?

The only Alpina thing I can see on the entire car is the badges. The wheels are standard fit BMW Style 32's not Alpina wheels.

Why not make the car appeal to the right audience - take the badge off the back, get rid of the jumbo sized Comic Sans font and bin the 'Alpina Style' wording.

It's a tidy 735i not an 'Alpina style!' anything.

That's a bit harsh! Description looks pretty straight and honest to me, and anyone searching on '735i' would find it. I don't see how anyone could be misled. Could be quite an attractive punt for someone handy with spanners. Good 'Shed of the week' candidate!

Adverts saying 'Alpina Style!' are just my pet hate, especially when they are advertising cars without any Alpina parts tongue out

Personally I do not think that is harsh at all, it is a 735i with badges, there is nothing 'Alpina style' about that car....... other that the badges, even one of them is in the wrong place.

When you do a car reg. check (such as askmid), should an Alpina show up as an Alpina?

Only reason I ask, is that there is an E38 I've seen a few times in a car park near me. Has the whole lot... Alpina badges, wheels, bodystyling, interior, etc.. but when I did a reg check on my iPhone (was curious to see if it was genuine) it came back as a BMW 735i.

Has someone been busy making a very convincing replica, or did Alpina take a stock 735i and carry out the mods, but it remained registered as a 735i?
