As many have already said a BMW is built to last. A 1-series up to a 7-series is a quality car capable of hitting 200-350k miles with minimal issues if correctly serviced and maintained on time.
Minimal issues? Coil packs fail every few months
Every car manufacturer makes a duff model/design once in a while sadly!
Coil packs are happening on a lot of their engines - they blame it on Bosch
Are you still having issues with you're E90? I remember reading your thread a while back. It's strange because a friend of my old man's has a 335d on 90k now and had absolutely no coil issues at all

1999 740i, currently @ 180k miles, still a quick car, drives beautifully. Never had to add oil between services. I have run from 70 to 180k so far, non service items over 6 years and 110k miles have been;
2 rear shock absorbers (1 went, both were replaced as a precaution)
2 front springs (went at the same time when parked in the garage last week, spooky).
2 rear springs
MAF
Bushes: front & rear (there are quite a few)

Everything works as it should except the passenger side rear view mirror, which no longer dimms automatically and has gone all smokey.

I'm on my third 100,000+ mile BMW.

Keep 'em maintained and they'll keep working is my experience.
Mines an e36 with 112k... stands me at: 1x coilpack and 1x lambda sensor... Cant grumble.

Used to work for a tow-bar fitting centre, owner used to buy/sell e36s and e46s as a sideline, all dealer unwanted trades, 100k was the minimum, most of the newer ones were ex company cars heading towards 140k....... ALL ran sweet as a nut and coul of passed for 40k cars

My old mans E46 320CD has done 177k since new, in our ownership. Its been a true legend. Its had a new turbo, intercooler, inlet manifold (swirl flap precaution). We replaced the tired drivers seat with a 35k one. Paint is still great (front end has been repainted twice). It really is great. The only thing is, its got an ongoing problem at the moment with warping brakes, which we are getting to the bottom of. Think it might be software related!

My E46 330i has 89/90k on the clock, and has been great, uses no oil. Receipts show it had a hefty auto box rebuild and new torque converter at about 70-75k, bills were about £1800 combined.

Interesting thread as I am thinking of changing to a BMW. But I have a Honda with coming up to 100k miles and err nothing other than wear and tear items has gone wrong. Ever!

First BMW. E34 still running nicely with no problems at 240k. Current steed. E39 530i on 182k. Early signs of auto gearbox fault though but at that mileage!...

Now why shouldn't any BMW do less than 100K if well looked after with regular oil changes. I have a 'Clarkson Reject' 320D 2003 E46 Compact now on 137K. Nothing but nothing has gone wrong - swirl flaps blanked off at 60K as a precaution - original clutch, tubo, gearbox etc etc -and drives like it always has......beautifully.

Apart from normal service items like brake pads, filters, engine breather etc all is still well......and the secret is of course regular oil changes......every 10K with fully synthetic oil. Gearbox and diff oil changed at 80K (don't you believe all this 'sealed for life' guff). It burns no oil between services and achieves 50mpg......unless I clog it (which is frequently) when it drops to a still respectful 47mpg.

Oh and no it doesn't do trips to stealers......the last time was at 60K when they intimated it needed brake discs, front and rear bushes, and shocks.......I didn't take them up on their 'offer' either. Since then it's flowm through MOTs with NO advisories. It's the trusty indy for me.

Best car I've ever had for reliability and I suspect it'll outline me.......200K here I come!

Because they have sacrificed reliability for headline chasing economy numbers.

I maintain my 330i myself and it has been great, I change the oil every 6000 miles or 6 months without fail and I had Blackstone Labs in the US do an analysis on the last oil change (100k) and I quote "this engine still looks like a spring chicken".

A couple of years ago I had a 2000 model E36 328 Edition Auto Convertible (Romantic Red) that had done 140k miles when I bought it..1 previous owner from new and only serviced at the supplying dealer (17 stamps). Needless to say it ran like a dream and apart from a slightly worn drivers seat bolster you would think it had done 14k miles..not a thing failed during my 8 months ownership and I probably shouldn't have sold it!!..the only reason I did so was that I could never quite get used to the colour, it looked very pink in some light conditions!!

I'm upto 230,000 miles in my 05 535d Tourer. Gearbox refresh at about 180k (£400) but apart from that it's still going strong and not showing signs of giving up yet
hi Julian

Have you increased the oil change frequency? Mine says 19k between services which IMO is too long.

Out of curiosity, and if you can be bothered to write it down, what have you had to replace?

With the complexity of these modern cars and engines it's quite endearing to know they can do the milage if they want to, as we all know - build quality has dipped in recent years but it seems the fundamentals are still as they were.

It's not rubbish, but it doesnt apply to any of the cars you own, so you won't have experienced it.

It's only the latest stuff with the breathtaking economy figures. There are so many reports of injection/coil/pump issues on the newer petrol engines that it has made me change my entire purchasing strategy to now only consider a low mileage example with a cast iron warranty.

The same complaints for the older engines simply dont exist - and there are loads more of them out there as well...

Have just put a deposit on a 187k mile Alpina B3

Has had a rock solid service history for the past 10 years at least and felt it - drove like a 50k miler

I have a 1992 E36 320i coupe with 432 000 miles. Still on the same motor, box and clutch. Every service (three BMW service booklets and all supporting documentation) was carried out by the selling BMW main dealer. Still drives great. On here for sale now though sadly.
