Dragging this thread back up,
This is the situation I'm in. (Think family car before your start)
i have £10000 pound to spend on a car. Would you go for a nearly new renault/vauxhall peugeot etc. (warrantly reliably etc)
or buy an older BMW 3-Series with around 80000 miles.
Regards.

Does buying a older (04/05) 525d or 535d with a lot options make more sense than buying a newer 07ish 520d for example?
In 2008 I brought a 05 525d that had done 90,000 for £9800 I ran it for 6 years and clocked it up to 169,000 mile , only problems were a wheel bearing and suspension bushes at the back £110 a side , sold it this year for £3650 I make that 0:077p a mile in depreciation, which I think is cheap motoring

If you are considering a nearly new Vauxhall or Renault for £10k, why not get an older one for £5k?
Buy the car you actually want, rather than looking for the newest car to spend all your money on.

FWIW, I've had Fords and Vauxhalls as company cars in the past. No real problems putting 120k+ miles on them in 3 years. My current E61 is coming up to 120k. Again, no problems apart from A/C compressor.

At the risk of tempting fate, my E36 328 has just passed 170k. It's holding together better than the family FORD Smax which has just got to 80k. It's not just the engine. Mine is still on the original exhaust! It also does not have bits of interior falling off either. As people have said, they are just better put together, there is a reason that they cost more new.

I have a 1992 E36 320i coupe with 432 000 miles. Still on the same motor, box and clutch. Every service (three BMW service booklets and all supporting documentation) was carried out by the selling BMW main dealer. Still drives great. On here for sale now though sadly.
Now that is really getting the value out of a car - actually this is more "Green" then any of the modern Eco or electric cars. Running an existing car for mega miles is the way to go.

432k miles same clutch..... Bloody food going.

Have to say any chance of some pics - I'd wager it will still look in great condition

118k mile 730d here, 55 plate. Only replacement part was the starter motor at 100k. Drives like new and I would struggle to find a nicer car for the few quid it's now worth.

Not all the time. It'll do 40+ if you are reasonably gentle, 50+ if you drive like a nun. I usually get around 32-34 in mixed driving, but I do a lot of very short journeys. Man maths suggests a 750i will be the replacement but the £500 a year RFL is a kicker.

I just managed to hit a one trip best of 45mpg on 25miles in an F10 535d that is door to door - given it states its extra urban is high 50's mpg I'm genuinely at a loss as to how that is possible

So far

1st tank c36mpg
2nd tank c40mpg
3rd tank c41mpg

All plain jane super market diesel normal driving - first tank had some hooning in it the other two my usual making progress.

Hi all,

First time poster here.

Following this thread.

I just wanted your advise.

I have seen a 2015 BMW 5 Series 2.0 518D for sale with 81k on the clock.
I have been advised by the dealer that it is one previous owner that have been using mainly on motorways (hence the millage) by a company. It has full BMW service history. The price is just short of 10K. Which is a good price. Visually it is in immaculate condition. Should I be worried about this millage. It does seem a little high for 4.5 year old car but saying that it has been used on smooth journeys not around town etc.

I will be looking to use it as a private higher car so wont be used for smooth journeys are more around town.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

T

You'd be better off starting your own, new thread as the one you're replying to is 5 years old.

However, I'll answer anyway.

A lot of diesels were bought specifically for longer-distance driving, and as such 20,000 miles a year is not a lot - e.g. a 40 mile/1 hour each way daily commute will give you that.

I'd not even consider calling a car 'high mileage' until it's got a least 100,000 miles on it, and then it's down to how well it's been looked after. I've seen 30,000 mile 5 year old cars that look like they've got 300,000 miles on them due to the lack of care.

All my ///M cars have had over 160,000 miles on before I've replaced them - and they were doing 30,000 miles a year.

Check with a BMW specialist garage or another private hire user - many diesels don't cope well around town as the dpf regen doesn't work properly.

81k is not high mileage.

81K miles isn't high mileage on a 21st Century BMW.

I had my 2007 123d for over 6 years until it got past 81K, then last year I bought an 06 plate E91 325i on 132K that still drove great until I sold it on 139K this year - only so I could get a 330i that's now on 110K miles and also running sweetly!

ha! Thread closed, biggrin makes me laugh people think high mileage is 70k+

I don't consider it high until 200k these days, my 2012 E91 318d N47 is on 121k now, only 7 years old - not even graduated yet biggrin
