WTF are they arguing about?
It's a one model forum - in my experience of these there can be blood and death threats over tyre pressure advice and brake pads choices. Biker's Nemesis said:

Would you ride one that you knew might be affected John? I know you've experience of mechanical stuff. I wouldn't until it had been checked out, it would play too heavily on my mind!
I've seen first-hand the end result of a thrown rod, imagine how bad it is...then double that!

I know you didn't ask me...but personally I wouldn't risk it.

Same here. I've seen them picking the bits of engine out of a testcell wall too I've seen first-hand the end result of a thrown rod, imagine how bad it is...then double that!
I'm also always amazed at how quickly a 'loose' bolt can undo itself when subjected to a bit of vibration!

Complete idiots. The rpobem is that the world's full of sheep who believe everyhting they read on the internet.BMW clearly believe there is enough of a risk to recall 1400 bikes and do an expensive partial engine strip.
Is it likely to happen? No - given their risk of law suits if they were happening frequently - if there was a real issue such as with the new ZX10R, they would be more agressive in their recall and wording.
Would it stop me buying one? No. Would it stop me riding one until sorted? Yes - as it would play on my mind.
Does this make everyone sheep? No - unless you are susceptible to Daily Mail type scare stories and look at every S1000RR now thinking it's going to punch a hole in its head at tickover because you read of a few going on the internet and a factory recall.
Has it caused some reputational damage? Yes - but as others have said - BMW's first big entry to the premier sports bike class comes in with a race level tune on a proddy bike. Surprise surprise, they are a little more fragile than a less tuned and more tested Jap lump. You pays your money, you take your chances - it hasn't done Ducati much harm over the years.
The test for BMW as with any recall will be the customer service and experiences around getting the work done on their bikes.

Rather a fatuous response to a simple thread where someone with an affected bike simply asked what the effect would be if the worst happens. As far as I can see, no-one has mentioned frequency. At worst, the normal anecdotal evidence comes out. The fact is, if the bolt goes, it's very, very bad news for whoever is riding at the time.

If you read my views on this, I've had cars and bikes all subject to recalls. I have no problem with recalls, I have no problem with the manufacturer announcing them to the world, I have no problem with the work they do on them.BMW clearly believe there is enough of a risk to recall 1400 bikes and do an expensive partial engine strip.

I do have a problem with the overreaction displayed by people nowadays. There is clear evidence of this on this thread, let alone the S1000RR forum, with people discounting the bike from their shopping lists, becasue it's been the subject of a recall.
How many of the panickers have got the 2012 model anyway? I'll guess not that many.
