Reminds me in some ways of Freddie Spencer who never seemed entirely comfortable in his (well deserved) mantle of GP god.
I was think exactly the same thing. I'm not sure CS is the talent that Spencer was though but they seem to have suffered from the same sort of injury which has shortened their careers.rhinochopig said:
Did you meet him at or away from the circuit? I think he's very different at the circuit as he's a very focussed individual.
Oh very definitely at. Had lots of other riders to compare him t over time as well.Look, maybe I am being harsh, and of course I don't know him well, much less own him, so he can do what he likes. But my OP was the same first-reaction, unbridled honesty that some on here would defend him for. I won't miss him - there are undoubtedly other riders coming through who deserve a crack at the top level. Maybe he'll come back, maybe he'll go and work for ABC between fishing trips. I hope it makes him happy, 'cos he's just never seemed that way racing bikes.

This just makes him EVEN MORE SPECIAL.
Love you Casey
Yep. There are some amazing shots of him backing it in at Philip Island. Love you Casey
I am not a Casey fan, but he is one of the greatest riders of his era and I am genuinely sad that he is leaving the sport. I believe that he had the potential to win many more world championships and if allowed to, be compared to greats like Doohan. Casey is just so young and I think its a waste that he is retiring so young
Compared to other world championshp riders, Casey was not getting as much money. I think Jorge was reportedly on more money and Rossi is on another level at something like €16m pPA yet which casey was on €6m pa and Jorge on €8M per year.
I don't think Jorge will go to Honda. Its more interesting to see how Spies will do and who will possibly take his seat!
I still think that Stoner will take the champioship this year. I predict that Jorge will win it in 2013 regardless of what happens with Rossi and Pedrosa. I just don't think that Pedrosa has what it takes to be a MotoGp world champ.
I have watched Casey a few times at Donnington, and at every MotoGP on tv for years.
He is not a "tv personality", but is an immense talent on a bike. He has that rare raw ability in the corners and guts like a Senna or Giles, but doesn't like the cameras back at the pits.
And seriously, have you SEEN his wife?
Good luck Casey. I am nervous that MotoGP is a two or three horse race now. Also, (guilt time) I would love to see Valentino back on the Honda as the sport is dying whilst he is on the Ducati. But if Vale does go to Honda and win, is that championship worth a little less as Stoner had already walked?
Edit - why has this thread not got pictures of his wife in yet????

The problem for riders in the modern media swamped world, is you don't just get judged on your ability; and let's not shy away from the fact that Casey Stoner's talent is stellar.
The media and viewing public gets to see so much of a rider these days, and expects a sideshow, a polished act, all smiles and sponsor names; character etc..
Think back to past eras; the only time anyone knew anything of a rider was in a major fall out like the Bill Ivy, Phil Read controversy, or when a top rider like Mike Duff when through gender change.
In the pre intense media age (right up to the early 90's Id say) quieter characters like Casey Stoner were judged on talent alone; I feel sorry that now a guy with that level of talent and commitment can be lambasted by 'fans' for being boring off track; for some time now there has been an element of bike racing 'fans' with an attitude that has more akin to the worst of football fans; follow one rider, lambast the rest.
For me the talent of all the guys racing is to be watched and admired, and bike racing will be worse off for Casey Stoner's premature exit from the blue riband class.
I applaud bike racers past and present, without their talents our lives would not be quite so rich; BRAVO to each and every one of them.
