forgive my ignorance here, but how in God's name do you steer a bike if not by countersteering??
i know we don't want to get into the whole, 'how to etc', but without it, you can't steer. Not properly. A bit like leaning across your seat in a car as oppossed to operating the wheel.
Telling a newbie they should be ....................... Awww, I can't be arsed.

Hmmm, you might be on the button there BN. Some things can't be explained i guess. No substitute for piling through a hedge to make you assess how to turn the bloody thing in the future......

Mainly because the advice is excellent, and also because the bike you ride has nothing to do with how good you are at riding. There you go, two reasons.
+1

WTF has the bike you own/ride got anything to do with the "quality" of "advice" given?

If he had a panigale, would you change your opinion of "advice" given?

I think "see the car driver as the enemy" is fully justified...

Car drivers are the enemy of bikers (motor and pedal).
You utter prat

I have been driving for 20 years and have never had a problem with bikes both motor and pedal EVEN though I have motor bikes cut me up, cyclists literally pulling out in front of me and at least one motor bike a day driving down my road thinking he is on the TT! It's scary how many idiots are on two wheels.

But the more these clowns abuse their right on the road, the less likely i am to show compassion and will adopt the "I am bigger than you, if you come off, it will hurt you more" as opposed to the swerving and trying to avoid accidents waiting to happen...

We all share the road, many bike riders need to appreciate this fact
You are the person that the entire "Think Biker" campaign is currently being targeted at. What you see is the bike "thinking he's on the TT" and then a faceless crash helmet or a leather clad robot. Try thinking for just a second about the human being behind that helmet or wearing those leather, he or she could be a doctor, a nurse, a fireman, a mum, a dad, husband or wife. Let that thought flash through your mind before you think "I am bigger than you, if you come off, it will hurt you more" If that fails to raise any sort of compassion in you let me know when your next going to Tesco so I can follow you round waiting for your bad "trolley discipline" and use the excuse to beat you to death with a basket...........
This +1.
Richard Heads like evo need to grow up.
Applying this aggressive attitude to car driving shows the mindset of a dangerous and typically selfish a-hole, the type who currently make our roads so deadly. Its likely to be the same fool who speeds up to block an overtaking vehicle, etc.
In short, this type of driver is a licenced f**k-wit who should have their licence revoked until they attend an intensive special needs course teaching meat-heads how to risk assess, read the dangers THEY cause to OTHERS and learn something the rest of us already know, how to apply common courtesy. (Apparently this would have to be delivered in a "Spot the Dog" format)
The problem is their clear intention to be as vicious as possible to whoever may have 'offended' their sense of superiority.

This breed are incredibly dangerous because they actively make themselves a problem and are keen to "put someone in their place".

We dont need this on our roads, go and sort yourself out before you kill someone!

I think we should leave this subject alone now.
16 pages of debate about "another newbie" to bikes & it's descended into the old "experts on counter-steering" bit again.

Leave it out guys. He'll either be told or figure it out for himself in time.

Let's just wait & see how he progresses & hope it makes good reading now as he probably gave up reading responses at about page 3 anyway.
Close topic perhaps ?

Another tip...

Before you learn any bad habits, do Ron Haslams race school.. Loads of great advice on body and feet position... All common sense stuff... Not too technical.

Seen a slow scared bandit 600 rider screaming round on a cbr600rr by the third session...

I guess you and Kipling missed my "j/k" (= joking) in the next sentence. Probably should have put a wink or :P in there or something :P
Anyway, Kipling43, no offence intended - was just a joke mate smile
And for that matter if he had a Ducati, I probably would have made the same joke [all Ducati riders wear Ducati branded Dainese leathers to ride to their nearest cafe every Sunday smile]
Are you both new to BB and do you not realize the only acceptable bike here is the snubnosed Blade? wink :P

Steve Evil - my statement wasn't really meant as "advice", but just clarification for myself and my own rider development smile

when it comes to countersteering for beginner bikers, I personally think its a good idea. After all, even on a bicycle you can use countersteer so surely its not too much to teach a beginner to do it?

I respect your opinions, but it worked for me.

I have followed riders who drift wide for no reason. They nervously mention that they ran out of grip, yet they were far from grip limit. Am I wrong to tell them they need to learn how to steer a bike, they actually think that steering is just a matter of leaning.
Er, if you're telling them to try to countersteer all the way round a corner then yeah, you are wrong to tell people how to steer a bike!
Why would I tell them that?
Stop bickering, you're both approaching the same conclusion.

I have been thinking recently about doing my CBT to see if I like biking, so this topic is ideal. The BMW Rider Training is in the Brecon Beacons, which sounds great and is local to me, so I just phoned BMW. As it turns out, all their weekends are fully booked for the next few weeks. They are soon to move their whole operation to Hertfordshire (I'm moving there too soon - convenient!), and will start doing mid-week slots as well. The price for the CBT Plus is £149 for the two days.

Cars for Show, Bikes for a Pro.
That'd make a good shirt slogan, no?
scratchchin
yes
yes
OK, so just the words and the smiley, or a symbol of a car and a bike to replace the words car and bike?

I'll get the T shirt chaps to work something up.
If you run with the pre messed-about slogan then yes...just words and a Union Jack Smiley Logo at the end of the sentence....NO car/bike images needed.

Ta smile
Yep, Y2's slogan ticks the boxs.
