Not really a fair comparison. Unlike with a car, the features that make a bike suitable for off road antics such as upright seating position and good low speed handling are exactly what you need for going to work.

Having said that, the R1200R perhaps with a screen added tempts me more than the GS.

Sports bikes tend to be chain drive and ludicrously uncomfortable, and tourers can be unnecessarily heavy and bulky for urban use.

There really aren't many non chain driven choices if you don't want a bulky tourer.
VFR1200, but difficult to make a case for it over the crosstourer. BMW800GT. Some Moto Guzzis.
Other than that 'adventure bikes'.
Take the panniers off a ST1300 or R1200RT and they are much better workhorses as they have decent wind protection and comfort... When you want to take lots of kit, ut the panniers back on smile

I ride RT into London and Birmingham regularly with panniers on as it looks a bit odd without them smile

The RT may look ok with no panniers but a Pan Euro just looks nuts : like Thunderbird 2 without the cargo module.

Dark tint visor has never caused me an issue with seeing the digital speedo in sunlight.

One of the reasons I chose the CT - a complete digital console was one of my mandatory requirement together with the following:

4 cyl engine
Shaft drive
Long service intervals (at least 8000m)
Top build quality
Lots of torque
DCT gearbox (added this after a test ride)

Why do Honda not put gear position numbers on their bikes, even with their Cross-Dresser models?

There is a gear indicator on the display but that shot the bike is in neutral.

Polarised sunglasses with all their benefits do have the tendency to make reading a LCD difficult. Some sort of science pish

Ah right, I have had dark visors since the year dot...have never needed to wear sunglasses on a motorbike.
Always thought of it as a bad idea as they end up in-beaded in your face if you have an accident.

Same here, dark visors all the way.

Sunglasses are a pain in the arse and a tad dangerous if you ask me.

I rode the new GS and it did have stability issues, front end when you power off started to wobble around 90mph depending on the road surface. It also had vibrations in certain rev ranges you can feel through your bum and bars. When I handed it back I mentioned it to them and it was obvious from their expressions they know about it. Sort the wobble and it is a great improvement over the old bike.

I bought an Explorer but to be fair the handling on this wasn't that good, it just needed an aftermarket rear spring to make perfect. Once you get used to the fly-by-wire throttle that is!.

Honda buyers can count to six?

I've never need the need for a gear position indicator & can't understand how they'd be useful.

This *10000, my stey old bandits rev counter doesn't work but why do we need them? That's what your ears are for.

Why the fk would you be looking at the indicator instead of the road ahead.

That. And the comment about polarised sunglasses. LCD displays are evil, I hate mine with a passion and yearn for a day when needles whizzed round dials, my old DT125 from 1983 was perfection in that respect. I am old, mind you.

So, how many times have you looked for 7th gear?

The quality of the Honda display is light years ahead of what was available a few years ago. Never had a problem with polarised sunglasses or any kind of glare. The only problem I have is when I change my bike I couldn't go back to an analogue display, same with the gearbox, my next bike must have DCT.
