I always thought that bikes for a grand or less were either crap bikes when new or good bikes that have been abused but proved myself wrong yesterday and got this;

11000 miles
Recent new clutch + gearbox and Swingarm bearings
Recently rebuilt hyperpro suspension
Recent service
Good tyres although they are different brands
Sat nav plus holder

It rides really well, there's nothing wrong with it. It's been repainted at some point and there are some scruffy looking bits but for 1k It's a good bike. I'm going to put it straight back up for sale.

Im selling my YZF 600 thundercat for a grand.

Bloke i bought it off looked after it well. Had new tyres and service done for me when i bought it. Chucked in a givi luggage system with it. Chain oiler and years tax.

I couldnt really argue. Fair enough it had a few scratches and needed a new tps sensor. Once i fixed this its been great but too small for me and i hardly get to use it with working away.

fk me that looks like a good deal, though I'd be slightly worried why it needed a new clutch and gearbox at such a low mileage.

Like you I always thought bikes at that price were the less popular ones, the girlfiends Diversion 600 cost us £800 3 years ago and so far has only needed a new battery and tyres. Paid £550 for a tatty looking TDM a few years back, I had the Hagon shock, bluespots and forks, while a mate had the engine. Those parts alone would have cost more than that and we made nearly as much selling the left over bits.

On the other hand a mate's absolute shed of a Firestorm got written off and he can't find another one for anything other than silly money.

Gearbox needed doing because the input bearing was knocking. All bearings and seals were replaced to make it good as new. I already have an 1100S and know that It's not that uncommon for things like this to happen. The clutch was done as they were there anyway, saves paying for the labour twice which is the expensive part.

I'll add to the 'it can be done' posts, mate got a gpz500 for £500, granted its a bit tatty and got odd tyres, but it's done less than 10k miles and gets him to work and back every day!

And because you're specifically after a track bike, another mate got a lovely nc24 vfr400 for 1200, granted its slightly over budget, but he balanced that carbs and sold it for 1600.

Wow, that doesn't look bad at all. I thought the cheapest ones of those were going for about £800 more! Where was it advertised?

They are! It was a mate's bike, he decided he wanted something else, I made him a silly offer, sort of as a joke but he said yes! I've just sold the panniers for it so now it's an £800 bike!

time to bring some life back into this thread.

I sold the zzr made £300 from the sale and bought this, a F model zx6r for £825.

It wouldnt start once I got it home so serviced it, new plugs and leads, new fuel hoses, gave it a right could clean up eh and that was it... stuck it on gumtree for £1150 sold it for £1100 spent about £100-125 on it so made about a £150 - £175 ish.

then bought a mint condition zx6r the exact same as mines, carbs done, new chain and sprockets etc. well looked after bike with a few scuffs but almost as good condition as mines.

£1250...

sooo thats me sorted, my beloved ninja for everyday use, daytona for the weekend and the other ninja for the track.

BUT THEN...........the nugget who I went to see a few months back texted me at the weekend. Thats the 120 mph wheelie king....The Bikers Nemesis of the North.

"Do you still want a bike" - yes

"Make me an offer" - £600

"haha" - needs lots done thats as much as im prepared to go

"like what" - carbs cleaned & synce, forks, new tyres, tax, foot peg, brakes, fairings...

"ive fixed the peg" - still needs lots done

"whatever" - £600 is my offer.

"keep your six hundred ill keep my bike" - ok

Got another text this morning, "ill do if for £700." - sorry can only do £600

"ok, when can you get it".........

Making sure he runs it to me as, tyres are illegal, has no tax, and im skeptical that he has fixed the peg. Still for £600 ill spend a few hundred or so and happy days a 4th bike for eh, well I dunno.....

How do you sell these bikes so quickly? Do you wait for the V5 or not? I want to get rid of the above BMW but I'm still waiting for the V5.

Dvla has a back log just now, you can sell it on by giving them the new owners slip.

once you get the v5 in your name you then fill it in with your buyers details

He is a brain dead ahole of the turd degree.

but for £600 im not going to loose much if it turns out a banger.

The way I see it is I spend about a £5er a week on football coupons and win fk all, maybe the odd £30 or £40. (I did have a system that returned £100 but it took forever).

This is gambling, I could win but then again I could loose.

In the last 12 months ive picked up a 1,500 mile daytona 675 for £3,000. (got a recent trade in of £4,000 no haggling).
and the rest so im not doing too bad. Ive seen some st though

Guy I used to go to school with runs a bike shop, his own little indie place, and what he used to do was watch ads like Gumtree and if a bike was still there after a couple of weeks he'd wade in with a stupidly low offer. Made no odds to him whether they said yes or no, just a numbers game but he did snag some surprisingly good bargains that way.

essentially what ive done recently.

Quite a few times ive put offers in £300 less than asking, explaining my budget and this is my offer please dont take offense. Get rejected then a few weeks later I get a text agreeing to that price. Just be polite and remember you will be selling something if not this purchase sometime soon.

The market really has dried up though, (scotland anyway), I stuck my ninja on just to see if I could make a few hundred from it so I could increase my budget and get something a bit more special.

No interest, nothing in two weeks. It needs nothing done to it and is in mint condition and one of the lowest priced in Scotland. Once you go over the £1,000 mark on gumtree anyway, the bikes tend to re-appear for weeks on end. A lot of honest sellers who ive went to see (sometimes the bike looks great in the ad but is rough as fk) say they have just had no interest. You of course get the lying aholes who say they have had lots of interest and there is someone coming to see it after you, "Really, its been up for a month".

That seems to be my experience with certain valued bikes. But hey it cures the boredom at work buying and selling.

Fair enough, not a problem now as the V5 just turned up so I'll stick it up on eBay now!
