I have to ask - are you okay now?It has nothing to do with your bike choice, but while I was making sure you wasn't a troll I came across a post about your accident last year. Sounds horrific.

Hence the need to get a bike licence, get a Desmo and enjoy it
Even though you've had a bad accident and all that, I still think it's a ridiculously stupid idea to go straight to a Desmo. I managed to get myself into trouble on an easy to ride 600cc Honda when I first started riding. Doubt a Desmo will be anywhere near as forgiving. I'd learn to ride something smaller/easier for at least 6 months before even considering going to one. If it was me I'd be quite embarrassed to turn up anywhere as one of those cocks as discussed before with the 2" chicken strips on the pretty much factory race bike.

A tough experience to get through both physically & mentally. Still have a few niggling issues i.e. I get a bad back every so often, can’t stand up for too long (especially if it’s cold outside) and can’t run at the moment (my biggest frustration as I used to be a keen runner) – but the accident totally changed my perception on life/priorities and overall made me a much stronger person.

Fair play. Sounds like you're recovering well though.Hence the need to get a bike licence, get a Desmo and enjoy it
Mate I'm made of pretty stern stuff, cried twice in last 20 years from memory - birth of my son & after fathers funeral but your story got me very close to that place again.
Please buy the Desmo.
But learn to ride on something else first, keep the big Duke in the lounge and let it remind you of what you can/have achieved.
Life is for living.
Al the best.

As stated by others, get the Desmo if you really want it and Ducati will insure it, and get a cheaper bike alongside it to learn on. The Desmo is probably a bag of ste a low speeds, it will be one of those bikes that is straining at the leash, all jerky throttle and heavy clutch when travelling below warp speed, and I'd guess the suspension probably doesn't suffer the ham-fisted. Something more forgiving to go alongside it will give you the experience and confidence to get more from the Ducati, instead of riding it very slowly and nervously.
I'm doing my DAS at the moment and my dream bike is a big bang R1 - I know I'd either have an off, or ride the bike to less than 10% of it's ability if I got one straight away. Still, they only go as fast as you ask them to, but big numbers come up very fast on big bikes!

I haven't read the background in order to give an impartial view.
first insurance will be north of 4k per year and im being conservative. There are 2 places that insure them, ducati and one other. I get bent over year on year and ive been riding along time.
The desmo does not suffer the inexperienced gladly!! its almost killed me three times. I mean properly nearly killed me because I tried riding like a normal bike.
it has to be ridden relatively hard with confidence. otherwise it will buckaroo, weave and shake its head on almost every bump. Its a terrible road bike.
which is why they need to be ridden on track. but if you bin it, everything starts at at least a grand. pegs? 5k, swingarm? 5k, carbon subframe? 6k front fairing stay? 4.5k.
ask any track rider, you will bin it at least once, at least.
dont do it unless you have really considered its use.
but id have mine even if I couldn't ride it. I love lookkng at it I love hearing it so I can understand you wanting one.
good luck.

Do it mate, and bloody enjoy it.
Passed my Mod 1 Yesterday (perfect run with no issues and a 60kph emergency stop!) and...........
Passed my Mod 2 today (with one minor)
(PS - although I did have some textiles & wet weather gear for the test - Any excuse to get the suit on & need to make it look a little used at least!)
Now firstly to get this titanium masterpiece out of my back in January & recover from that:
Then get some more training & get a 899 Panigale to get some miles under my belt - then onto the Desmo
Happy Christmas All!!
