A bit of both really. Some of it may well be unjustified but if even a small part of the zip gets damaged then you have a weak point and potentially there goes your waterproofing. I was looking at the Alpinestar jacket but the vents have waterproof zips and I just don't see how that holds up long term.

The double flap over a normal zip is proven and with extra poppers/velcro I would imagine is stronger than a plastic zip but I can't back that up with any science/proof.
