A few weeks ago I was washing my Tuono when it started hissing and smoking from behind the frame, cue me ripping bits off the bike desperately trying to get at the source to work out what the fk was going on.
Couldn't find it but, since then the bike has completely flattened two batteries in just a couple of days when not connected to the trickle charger. So this weekend I decided to get to the bottom of it.
Tested the main circuit at stationary with the engine off and found a steady draw of about 0.25 amps, way too high. After some faffing removing tank, airbox, coils, etc. we found this:
Cabling from the rectifier had been pressed up against a sharp edge of the frame and cut through to short on the frame, must have been like this since I bought the bike last year but cleaning fluid I was using helped to make the short circuit much worse. I think I'm a bit lucky I didn't have a fire!
Good spot and as you say, lucky escape.Couldn't find it but, since then the bike has completely flattened two batteries in just a couple of days when not connected to the trickle charger. So this weekend I decided to get to the bottom of it.

Yeah mine needs a proper de-grease down low, the swingarm/rear hub areas area bit dirty, but nothing a good session with the rear wheel off can't fix. My main job today was cleaning the Tuono as it was filthy, waxing the VFR was a small side job. I've only done 35 miles on it so far, looking forward to using it for the commute this week!

Gave the VFR a coat of carnuba wax as I was giving the Tuono a full clean, doesn't come up bad for a 17 year old bike!
That looks good. I was considering one of these as a replacement commuter for my Thundercat but I've decided I want something more sporty for trackdays so I'm going to get either a b series zx6r or an early K gsxr600. In reality the VFR would be a much better commuter but it will double up as a trackday bike. moanthebairns said:
Riding during the week at night is the way forward. No traffic. No police. It becomes your own race track. Over 100 miles in two hours with fag and fuel stops.
Agreed - did a Lochearnhead/Comrie/Braco loop after work last week and lucky if I saw 20 cars past Callander patchb said:

If you can be bothered and i understand its a commuter but the exhaust /engine will come up quite well too, I used a weak citric acid, gunk and some scotchbrite pads to clean up the headers , engine and the linkages etc on my similar age firestorm.
