Another new rider here, DAS passed on Friday and first bike picked up from Oxford on Saturday! The weather hasn't let me go out for a decent ride yet but I can't wait rack up the miles!

BMW F800R, I don't think I'm really their target market being 25 but the rookie to rider deal was just what I needed to get me onto two wheels.

Yep 821 Dark.

I actually went in to the Ducati Dealership originally, with the intention of buying a Scrambler Full Throttle.
I loved how it looked, but it seems like a pretty simple bike for the money. Felt like I was paying for all the marketing hype.
I started looking at the other models, and looking at what that money would get etc. And obviously saw the 797 and 821.

I just felt that £7000 was better VFM on a less than year old 821, instead of a Scrambler/797 which share the same engine. I didn't want to get bored of the power, or regret not making a slightly bigger step as I like to keep bikes/cars for a while.

I have no regrets. I still prefer the 'style' of the Scrambler, but the 821 Dark (the only one for me) looks mean as hell, and I've plenty of great comments on how it looks. Its mean and aggressive in a 'street' way.

It's safe to say, the power is bananas for a newbie. (75hp vs 112hp I believe).

Plus the residuals on the 821 seem strong.
Thanks, did you manage to ride the 797 & 821 back to back? I'm interest to hear how they compare.

What is swinging it for me towards the 797 at the moment is
- the slight reduction in power (75bhp vs 112bhp) for someone who has never ridden before, I'm inclined to take the less powerful option to try and get 2-3 years of good experience under my belt
- the left hand side of the bike on the 821 looks a little 'uglier' than the 797 due to all the water cooling gubbins. I had never considered it before, and interestingly all the press shots of the 821 are taken from the RHS of the bike, so you never really see the cooling pipework until I was looking at them in the metal in the showroom.
- I sat on the 821 in the showroom and lo and behold my Size 11 right heel was clashing with the exhaust mount when sitting with the balls of my feet on the pegs, whereas the 797 is a different design altogether.

Is the 821 a bigger bike overall?

Had one for a week from a dealer while my S1000 was being sorted - easily underestimated bike but I enjoyed it. Quite a bit more poke than I was expecting and decent handling too.
A far better bike than a Yam XT660R I also had at the time.

BMW F800R, I used to have the belt driven ST version, good bike, they use a Rotax 800cc twin.

Sat on a 797 yeah, felt ultimately very similar.

I'm 5ft 7, so the height/size of the bike was a big concern for me.

Points to note, 75hp will IMHO feel quite normal very quickly. The 821 has 3 riding modes, the first of which limits the power to 75hp.

I think it's a great looking bike, but it's all subjective. I haven't even noticed the additional cooling pipes etc.

I don't have the issue with my heels on the rear etc.

It is the screen, very small but actually quite effective, probably helped as the bars are very flat with the top yoke clamp being low too.

Ah, right, was yours Blue? I should have twigged it was a BMW looking at the fork legs.

I don't really keep up to speed anymore with new bikes.
