Todays stable of z650 and z900 with another Z650 in the process of resto and z1100 ELR in bits awaiting resto.
The green 650 I bought new in 77.

My RG500 'special' was one of the fastest bikes I have ever had. .......... and had around 140 bhp
You sure about that - IIRC, the RD500 was very difficult to extract high power like that from and the RG was the tuneable engine - even that struggles to get the high 130´s... With the RD you had to go to big barrels from the 350 powervalve to get high power... I might be talking total shoite though as I got rid of my 500 LC a looooong time ago in 1991 (unfortunately..!)
Will have to go have a google smile

Stan Stephens is the man to ask, he tuned both bikes to the highest tune he said would still be ride-able on the street.
Looking back just now through loads of photo albums, the RD500 had 126 bhp and the RG500 138 bhp. My RD350YPVS had 72 bhp.
All 3 were in pretty radical tune with big carbs., race pipes and uprated ignition, etc.

There should be a 2 stroke pic thread in here somewhere. Seeing all these takes me back to that era.

Sorry bud, slap me for not reading your post right, for some reason I thought it said RD special tongue out
138bhp in a lightweight RGV250 must have been mental - I had an RGV 250M for a while... After coming off a Gixxer I was amazed at the lightweight & handling even with it´s original power it was fairly rapid, and even more nippy after I siezed it and rebuilt with an SS Stage III that took it close to 70hp... but with double that it would have been totally wild!!

I´m really lusting after a 500cc mental stroker now again... But, it´s sacrilege to carve up these old beasts for such a project nowadays..

Maybe need one of these in one of thesetongue out
