I've come off a bicycle and had a chunk taken out of the back of the helmet. The times I've been hit by a car, both times at low speeds, I have clipped my helmet. May not have resulted in serious injury, but my face definitely wouldn't have been in a good state. So yes, helmet all the time.

I've had a few offs on field bikes and push bikes as a teenager, with no helmet. I have the scars to prove on my face. I always wear a full face helmet, feel naked without it

Every year when riding something hits me hard in the visor or face at speed; insects, the odd bird and this just reinforces the necessity to me

Car seat belt saved my life in a car accident, so I continue to wear one of those too.....

I remember my Dad telling me, on numerous occasions, about a lad he knew well when they were younger who had nipped down to the local corner shop minus helmet, dropped the bike and went down with his skull striking the kerbstone - sadly game over. It's one of those things that you hear that tends to stick in the back of your mind forever.

When we were kids and had field bikes and stuff we always had pi$$ pots available to wear - although I never once remember my Dad saying anything if we blasted across a stubble field with no lid on, which we did occasionally !

No lid on UK roads today ? You would need your head testing !

I think whatever your stand point, It would be nice to have the choice, its just part of the ever growing nanny world we live in.

Having lived & worked in the Far East, I have ridden without a helmet and it just feels weird. Bit like walking around with your winky hanging out.
We've all been there. biggrin

Living (mostly) in Texas these days, I wear one even though they aren't compulsory in the State.

I'm not too bothered about wearing a jacket. Yes, I know but it's far too hot.
I know what you're all going to say abut you'd probably die of heatstroke.
Even the Police ride in short sleeves in the Chips stylee.

I'd agree with the choice element, as low speed it's not any more risky than cycling.

But I'm more concerned about flies and st weather impacting my face - nevermind safety it's just uncomfortable.

I passed my test in 1969. I used to ride virtually everywhere on my Triumph Bonneville without a helmet, however I did wear my piss pot if it was raining...to stop my hair getting wet.

This wasn't that unusual, only about half of my friends wore them.

There was absolute uproar when compulsion was brought in, about 1973, more to do really with freedom of choice.

Crackers when you look back.

I think I'd occasionally ride without a helmet in summer.

I sometimes pop down to the shops for lunch wearing a helmet with jeans and a t-shirt if it's roasting hot, it would feel great wearing sunglasses instead.

I wouldn't be going fast or far and take bigger risks on mountain bikes.

Having said that wasn't there an-anti helmet protest in the states where one of the main guys died of head injuries (that would have been prevented by wearing a helmet) in a collision during the procession.

In the US I'll ride around locally without a helmet - between meetings or going to the shops or for a coffee etc. Anything longer I will wear a helmet - I don't like bugs in the face at 50+mph wink

Some of the time probably.. I've certainly ridden slower when I've not had one one.. I guess there is a paradox in that somewhere..

Longer trips or any real pace and I'd put the 'lid' back on.. (having the choice of course. )

some people wont like my answer, but I would personally never wear one unless possibly doing a long motorway run.
I am no big fan of wearing seatbelts either though.... but I do in an attempt to set an example for my kids and insist my kids do..
How can you not be a fan of seatbelts it takes a second and you never notice it.

I mean I thought the original question was reaching new depths but this...

I can't think of a polite way to tell you that your An idiot.
Exactly this. I've had crashes where the helmet means I'm still alive, and the same with seat belts
Choosing not to wear a seatbelt is like crossing the road and choosing not to look
I can't think of a single rational argument about not wearing one that isn't ridiculously easily outweighed by the benefit of them

No need to compromise on safety these days ;

No, I'm not that arrogant.

Fell off last week funnily enough. I would have permanent facial scars without a helmet, from several crashes.

Always.
Couldn't care less what others choose to do or not to do - even though I guess this was supposed to be a "contentious" topic , I can not get warmed up about others' choices, it's just the gene pool sorting itself out ...
