And today's commuting highlight is...
Discussion
I turned onto the A2 this morning into town off the M25 in my car , it was dark about 7am and in the already queuing traffic I got passed by two on a bike , the pillion had a woollen hat on, no helmet and was clinging to the back of the rider as close as they could. Both dressed in black with tiny rear light, like a candle.
The traffic was 3 lanes bumper to bumper, the temp was -1.5 and they were picking through the traffic that was moving at about 40mph. I still had ice on my car and I had started the journey at 6am.
Mad devils

Body was nice and toasty last night but legs and face were freezing. Had the same issue with my visor fogging up and getting sleet all over it. Hellish two hours. Looking for a pinlock to put in now
Pinlocks are one of those bike game changers you wonder how you managed without one!itcaptainslow said:

Pinlocks are one of those bike game changers you wonder how you managed without one! This is the first winter for umpteen years that I've hardly ridden to work. Life is just too short for the morning/afternoon darkness, penetrating cold, salt, slime, ste all over the bike & other assorted unpleasantness. Some of you lot must be well hard, commuting in fking sleet!!!! Roll on the spring..............

Not about being hard, just that (for me) anything beats London public transport and I'll tolerate the cold etc. just so I can avoid mingling with the great unwashed.Bumblebee7 said:

For me anything is better than sitting in traffic. I also think there is something quite exhilarating about riding when the weather gets really bad. It feels like a challenge. But then again, this is only my first year doing it...
Maybe I was less tolerant this morning, but it certainly seemed like the standard of driving was significantly worse than usual.
One guy in particular went out of his way veering left to right to prevent me from getting past him. He was previously right up my ass beeping and flashing to get through, on the rather congested A40 where all traffic was going under 10mph A van driver nearly sideswiped me entering the Westway roundabout just as I approached the front of the queue he accelerated and changed lanes without indicating. None of the above was ever close enough to put me in danger, but it certainly seemed like I was having to react to a lot more bad driving than usual.

Rode in this morning as normal, and like you say it wasn't that bad, definitely no worse that recent days. As I'm in SSE London I'm going to see what the weather is doing later and decide whether I'm going to ride home or not then - can always take the train and leave the bike secure in the basement of the office.
