Kiethton, I'm not 100% (check first) but I believe those exhaust bandages you can buy are ok for MOT. Not sure how big and what shape your collector box is but if you get a couple from Halfords you might be able to shut it up enough to appease the MOT man and get the form stamped? Not a perfect repair but might get you out of a hole (boom boom, I'm here all week, end of the pier, etc etc).

Failing that, where do you work? There's a bike place along Commercial Rd which was carding all the bikes in Minories a week or two back. But any body repair place ought to be able to weld a patch on for you.

I'm moorgate so happy to head anywhere within a decent distance really.

Any pointers for anywhere else to call, about to try the one in islington now, even if they can just bandage it for me - will try and get a pic of the hole for consensus in 5 or so when I walk past

You're not going to be able to mend that!

yeah that's my thinking looking at it - reckon a bandage will get me through the defect inspection so I can repair properly when back from holibob's on mayday?

Speaking as an engineer, from a technical perspective that is proper fooked! biggrin

The metal on the collector is usually thicker than the downpipes so it may be weldable, but tbh it's going to take a while to do, so financially you're likely to be better off buying a secondhand set of headers. Of course there is the potential issue with studs shearing but that's going to happen either way - unless they lay the bike on it's side they're going to struggle to weld that in situ.

I had to weld the header pipe on my old TS250 a few weeks back and even on the lowest setting it was still blowing holes.

The place near Commercial Rd is called SBK, you could try them, but TBH you want somewhere a bit old & "backstreet" if you're going to persuade them to take that welding job on. There used to be a place between Vauxhall and Camberwell, set slightly off the main road, don't know if that's still there?

Thanks, just called and they've said they can't do the temp fix (only option i've got given the time constraints) but suggested putty as a quick and ugly repair to get through this notice. Think I'll give that a go alongside a baked bean can this evening, only option I seem to have.

Chemical metal might do it but not sure how that would work around holes that big - used it on a car manifold once and it was great.

Putty will fall straight out of that, you'll need something to hold it in.

You could get a few of these: http://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/garage-equi... I think you'll need a few to go right round and to overlap sufficiently. They will bond together to a certain extent but as you say, something metal is probably necessary to help support it. See whether one of these will be big enough (it says silencer, so if it will go round a car silencer it should go round your collector): http://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/garage-equi...

Actually that's a really good shout - tub of chemical metal and one of those sheets of aluminium mesh to build it on. Again, Halfords sell both.

Thanks, products reserved

Presume that a bit of sand paper and white spirit will be enough to clean up what's left there?

WTF was going on with the traffic last night? I know it's nearly Easter, but surely people don't start their getaways at 5pm on a Wednesday?

Everywhere was absolutely chocka. Roads which I normally sail through became 5mph weave-fests. There was a lot of 4-wheeled traffic going approximately nowhere. Even dual carriageways outside of the centre of town were at a standstill (e.g., A20 at Mottingham, cars couldn't even cross the junction at Court Rd because the other side of the junction was solid).

Met up with someone I know who commutes out of Docklands and he said it was the same there, took him ages just to get off the Isle of Dogs - on a bike.

Hmm, places like Jamaica Road where complete log-jam. It was a question of trying to find gaps you could squeeze a bike through.

On a separate note, saw your other post that the chemical metal didn't work? You must have been doing it wrong! tongue out

What year/model exactly is it? There's a very faint chance a mate of mine might have what you need, let me know and I'll ask him.

Yeah, didn't work too well, turns out when i got the bits off to rub it all down beyond the 2 big holes there were 4 or 5 further ones and no decent (accessible) metal left on the thing.

Have now e-mailed City of London police asking for the guy to clarify the extension as he said 3 weeks should be fine at the roadside and have just ordered a new stainless steel version, a Delkevic as recommended by the garage who I'm just trying to get it booked with to fit on the day I land, either that or my dad to run it in to them of he can (although after a very big smash on Loampit vale a few years back he's been banned from ever touching a bike again and may not have the physical ability to do it).

First run in on the bike this year. Traffic was light but it was cold leaving home at 05:45. Heated grips on the whole way in.
