or a 750 kettle that is in the next town from me, but almost €4k! and that was the cheapest one!

"Old timers" - that's the official name for a vehicle more than 25 years old, - motorbikes they get a free pass, no tax and no MOT, but there is a limit on the mileage so they command good prices here. My son is doing up a soon to be old timer, a BMW 325iX touring, come January it will have old timer status and have no tax but still require an MOT (Keuring) tax here for a car is very expensive, for a bike not so much, my FJR1300 is €49.80 per year, insurance is the killer for bikes the FJR is €154 per year TPO and that is with 8years no claims, fully comp would have been €6000.00, old timers again get special cheaper rates which makes having an older vehicle attractive. My MG if I wanted to import it here would cost me an arm and a leg but probably would not pass the keuring as it has a modified engine - difficult to hide a whacking great supercharger.

Ohhhh now this has me seriously tempted, an IT465, I had one back in the late 80s early 90s, bought it as a barn find, needed a tow from a car to get it started but it did run, cost £125 spent £200 on fully restoring it to as new condition then got it re registered for the road, not a Q plate, and ran her for a few years, fantastic bike. It's the one bike I don't have any pictures of and the one bike I put the most effort into.

I really fancy a 550 myself but I'm after an early one with the front drum.

I have an odd love of all things drum braked. Maybe it's an illness?

I do wonder if we'll bring in a similar'old timer' rule into the UK? It seems to be the thing done in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands and with the march towards ever tightening emissions and personal freedoms? I like the idea of cheaper insurance and running costs though...

That little IT465 looks lovely. Go and get it bought!

It does look good, but is non standard for an IT, no front headlight, faring, speedo, wrong mudguards, no tool case, side stand, boost bottle - tho those were usually removed, original silencer was complete with spark arrester but was a bit LOUD for the road. That's all minor stuff but may be difficult to get now, the original tank was aluminium and was road legal, the plastic ones were not.

The original rear wheel was 17" and I put a road tyre on that and bought a complete rear wheel including axle from a breaker and got a 18" rim laced onto the hub, the rear wheels were quick interchangeable and I could swap them over in a few minutes, I used my IT every day going to and from work with the road wheel and for the weekend put the 18" on with a Pirelli Sand Cross tyre and could go just about anywhere on it biggrin I also had a selection of sprockets and I could change the gearing from about 70mph flat out to 120mph flat out. With the 70mph gearing on she was a bit of a beast and great fun on the motocross tracks. even with the 120mph gearing she could lift the front wheel at 80mph just with the throttle. The only two bikes I ever regretted selling are the IT465 and the GS650 Katana, the 380 I got my use and lots of fun out of her and she owed me nothing.

Yeah more and more regulations and tighter controls on everything, was just discussing this with one of my stepsons this morning as we went to collect my car from the garage. Well I'm doing my bit for the environment, I run 2 V8 cars a 3.6l TDV8 and a 4.6l petrol. biggrin

Nice, couldn't tell if it was an X5 or X7.

Best wheelie bike I have ever ridden.

OK to use this thread to talk GT750s in general?

After years of gently nudging, someone I know with a GT750 has indicated that he'll sell it to me cool . I have seen the bike, but not for a few years (Bob, I have a feeling we exchanged emails about you possibly buying it way back when?).

Most of what I currently know is that it's complete, running (apparently VERY nicely, the owner is very handy with a bag of spanners) and MOTd. The downside is that someone previously thought it would be a good idea to powdercoat the frame ORANGE eek and to chrome some of the ally bits. The frame could be sorted easily enough, I'll have to see how much rogue chrome it has and take a view on how easy it would be to accumulate those parts as we go along.

Price-wise, it's probably a sensible amount of money for what it is.

Since life has been somewhat taxing recently (for non-bikey reasons), I'm rather hoping it happens!

I use Motul Synthetic, and witht he oil pump set up as per the manual, it barely smokes, except when cold, and seems to burn much cleaner than the 2 stroke oils of old i.e. Castrol TT.

Seems to create much less carbon build up too !
The Silkolene is pretty smoke free too. How does the Motul smell? The new fangled Castrol stuff just smells foul.

Whatever goes in it has to make the garage smell nice!

smile
I'll find out what my mate uses but I'm sure its a Castrol product.

He likes it smokey as it annoys all the cyclists on their Sunday 'races' around Box Hill
I have Castrol 747 in the LC and it smells exactly like the old Castrol R, apparently it's supposed to be pre mix only....

Correct. Designed for premix use only. Viscosity is too high for oil pump use. Also consider it's designed to be used at a relatively high ratio of 30:1 or even higher like 24:1 so you might not be getting the benefits of using it in the pump metered system which usually run around 40 or 50 :1
Better to use a dedicated pump oil like Motul 710. Not 800 as that's another premix only oil. The best oil depends on the circumstances of use wink

Cool, thanks for that, the guy I bought it from had it in there, not sure if he'd upped the pump but yeah I was going to change as it's got very little left, no point risking a heat seize, but man it smells good...

Tea spoon full of 747 in the tank when full will keep you happy in the smell dept wink but no more than a cap full to a full tank otherwise you risk leaning the jetting out.
Problem is the viscosity in cold weather with the premix oil is on colder days or mornings the oil doesn't flow as well. But in cold weather the bike goes better so needs decent oiling. Not hard to see where the problem lies biggrin

Correct. Premix only. I used to use this in the race tzr, at approx. 32:1. No greater smell than setting off from the grid in a haze of castrol
