I think they need to change the law so that anyone caught in the act can get put away for a good bit of time, especially if they hurt someone in the process. I think part of the appeal for these f**ks is that if they get caught it's 'usually' just a slap on the wrist so they really don't have much to lose.

I'm up in Aberdeen and there have been a rise in this here as well, nothing to the extent of London but almost a daily occurrence here. They tend to be breaking into peoples lock ups/garages at night. There have been a few that have been caught but they just go straight back to it as the law is not strict enough to deter them!

I can't imagine them running to the Police to report an assault. I would also assume those carrying out the assault on the poor guys would be smart enough to mask their identities somehow also. There was a time when the fear was with the thief in so far as getting caught stealing, time to reinstall that fear in them.

When I reported one of my many bike thefts to Fulham police station and asked about bait bikes, they told me they had a brand new S1000RR rigged especially for that purposes but couldn't get the permission / manpower to use it.

Can't remember where I read it now (was poss here?) where someone said that what's really needed is for 3 or 4 blokes to lift one of these lot into a van, drive them out into the sticks and give them a shovel and tell them to start digging. Then once they've dig a big enough hole, tell them that if they get lifted again it will be for real the next time. They're simply not afraid of anything in "normal" society so they need to learn harder lessons.

Well I passed a foreign-reg flatbed on the M20 earlier, presumably ferry-bound, with 7 or 8 bikes on the back all laying at 45 degrees with straps over them. Just a thought.

Slight problem with your plan is that you've just given them a pretty useful weapon by handing them a spade. Plus, it's also kidnapping which carries a fairly hefty sentence.

Me too. I don't think I'll risk riding my KTM in London, I'll just stick to using my old Fazer.

Noticed a few suspect characters around the West Drayton/ Uxbridge area recently (more than usual anyway). A few peds with no plates, a couple of kids on a ktm 125 followed me for a bit a couple of weeks ago and yesterday I was passed by a clearly stolen Matt Grey Street Triple, rode straight past a police car with no plates. Hopefully my beaten up old XJR400 doesn't tickle their fancy. Makes me think twice about taking one of my nicer bikes to work though.

On a slightly unrelated note last year someone left a pinched scooter with swapped plates outside my garage, I called the police and it was removed within the hour.
Just in the area, I have noticed some young gentlemen racing around on bikes like a GS and scrambler. I cant tell if they are nicked or not as the plates etc are all on. But they are literally thrashing them up and down the roads, wearing jeans and puffa jackets.

Oh blimey. st. Now I won't be able to go through with it. I'll have to start thinking all over again.

readit Scooter gangs commit 50,000 crimes a year in London, according to the Evening Standard. The article highlights motorcycle hijacking by scooter gangs and reports there being at least 500 known offenders.

It looks like vigilantes are being recruited to hunt down gang members.

I ride a tmax and it's on my mind that it might get to the point where some scrotes try to hijack me. I tend to keep my visor lowered at traffic lights etc as squirting acid seems to be the in thing these days.

It's like fking Brazil rather than London.

At least in Brazil there is the off-chance of instant karma via an off-duty cop with a gun. Over there unless someone rams them, they are off and gone.

Have any of them been caught, I don't see pushing a bike with your foot as much of a getaway plan , what's a copper going to do if threatened with a weapon even if he is on the scene, anywhere else point a knife at a copper and you get a bullet, here it's stop or I'll shout stop again or I might hit you with this stick

In the 60s they used to say criminals had respect for the law because they weren't armed so they didn't go armed, now we have gangs of criminals as brazen as this those days are over

I recently followed a couple of moped thieves doing this and they are surprisingly efficient using this technique, I hate them with a passion, and we spend a large proportion of our time dealing with them, they are quite difficult to deal with tbh. Anyway I'm not getting in to the argument about what the police do or dont do, this isnt the place to do so, and I'm not the person to do it!

So once the thief is on the bike they coast it in neutral with the bike behind two up, one driving and one pushing every so often, once they've got going it just keeps rolling keeping the speed at about 40-50, yeah its bloody dangerous, red lights and junctions etc. and hard to catch.

Secondly, I and most officers I know have dealt with many suspects with knives unarmed, and bought most in, some got away, you dont need a gun, that's the last thing we need in the UK, as then they'd likely start tooling themselves up properly, and I for one would be less up for facing that! As for all this Acid stuff, this really makes me angry, whther its lemon juice or whatever the fact that victims don't know what they've been sprayed with must be utterly terrifying. People who do this need locking up for a damn long time.

well looks like maybe the police have officially changed their tactics at long last. It will be interesting to see if the copper gets desk duty for the next 1000 years while he is investigated or not. Unfortunately I bet we don't find out.

What was the charge?
Why has the moped rider not been charged?

Are you really asking that? While I have no doubt the scrote deserved a good kicking, donging so while plod are holding him down is a privilege reserved for the custody sergeant in the privacy of the cells!!!
