Does it look safe enough as is though?
Yeah, all the important parts are inside coated in brake fluid. If the brakes are working well there are no issues.

The rest is cosmetic, for tidy up as mentioned above a media blaster would be perfect, if you don’t have access to one you can sand it with a fine grit sandpaper and paint.

I'm guessing most of you have office jobs ?
Yes. I do my office job, then come home and rebuild classic motorcycles for fun. What's your point?

Yes. It's just a reservoir. If it doesn't leak and the mating surfaces and gasket mate OK, it's fine.

That's how I always do it - as long as you use brushes and common sense - it's no different to using a lathe
I think most would argue that introducing the hazards associated with operating a lathe, rather than those associated with a brush, would not be common sense in this circumstance.

I would suggest anyone who insists on cleaning a chain whilst the wheel is turning under the power of the engine should visit Youtube to see the injuries which can result from it.

To each their own of course.

I would say it's quite a bit different than operating a lathe, at least with a lathe there isn't an easy crush path to stick your fingers into. Obviously a rotating assembly is always dangerous, but different strokes.

Anyway, if V8RX7 wants to carry on with it, enjoy. Personally I think rotating the chain with the wheel is about the easiest bit, much harder not to fling crap everywhere on a clean bike.

I do currently have an office job, however for the last 25 years I’ve been working mainly in the oil industry.

As part of my job I’ve abseiled off the side of oil rigs, worked in nuclear power stations, been through two emergency landings in helicopters etc.

One of the shipyards I worked at in Holland had killed 4 men in separate incidents in less than 4 years,. When one of our lads got set on fire during a shift nothing was said.
In the same yard I almost fell into Rotterdam harbour from a rig leg about 150ft up because things like safety harnesses weren’t really used and the wind caught me.

Still wouldn’t be lubing a chain on a running motorbike!

A shoebox? Well you had it good!

The main question is... would you lube the chain while the engine was running?

It's a stupid question. I wouldn't risk anything more dangerous than shredding paper with my tie not tucked in...cos that is ok to do.

If you plan on lubing the chain Whilst it’s running just make sure it’s car engine oil in it - when your hand gets sucked in, the clutch will slip ....... simples smile

It’s fine. He doesn’t work in an office like us chumps, has fingers of steel. They will just clean the sprocket as they are dragged through.

That's unlikely to result in losing your fingers...YMMV.

The bloke at my old workplace who did it only had one arm (with an industrial shredder!)- apparently he was using that to hold onto his tie as his head got ever closer to the blades. Someone hit the emergency stop for him (when they'd finished laughing)

Just been sent a video of someone using a live spinning lawnmower blade to fornicate himself...aside from putting me off food for a few days I can't help but wonder if the same bloke cleans his alloys with them spinning with the engine on, car in gear

As it spins the end of the dull blade strikes the end of his knob. You are right, you really don't want to see the video. I don't want to see the video. Need to find a way to "undo" something I've just seen
