Ebay picture says it has 4 carb /throttle bodies. Sounds like they could do with being adjusted or you could use the centre stand smile

Ive also got one cylinder where the last few turns on the spark plug are when you cover your eyes and hope because they are very stiff and tight. Problem?

Sounds more like you need the throttle cables adjusting as picking it up will move the bars, do the revs rise and fall when you turn the bars left to right.

Carb balancing means syncing the carbs to each other, whether the bike is on the stand or not makes no difference.

Edited to add spark plugs should not be that tight, you should be able to seat them with your fingers then give them half a turn with a wrench, if its an old bike there could well be ste and dirt buildup on the threads.

Do oil cooler lines need to be made of steel or can they be made of more flexible braided lines like brake lines?

You can get proper braided flexible lines for oil. Demontweeks and other similar places have a big range.

Helmet fitment question. I have two helmets, one HJC and one AGV, both at the lower end of the range. The AGV has a snug fit which leaves marks on my head after riding (but not to the point that I ever get a headache), but even so in the wind blast at higher speeds seems to push back into my chin, which I find a bit worrying / irritating.

The HJC doesn't seem to do this. Is this a fitment thing? Does it just mean this shape doesn't suit my head? Or does this happen to other people?

Cheers
Rob

Yes its a fitment thing, they are all different and no two heads are the same shape.

Float heights are potentially wrong.

My Nolan does this. First ever helmet and leaves imprints on my forehead after 30 mins and a headache after 1 hour. Always thought the headache was due to dehydration/squinting but it's this. One of those things you find out AFTER buying. Not sure if there is a way to 'spot reduce' right spots?

Genuine question, how come the drive chain and sprockets stretch, get worn and need replacing, but (most) timing chains (cars and bikes) are good for 200k+ miles?

Timing chains run in filtered oil.

Drive chains and sprockets run in a grinding paste composed of road dirt and salty water.

ETA: there's not much load on a timing chain either, compared to a bike's drive chain.

Which would you rather be moving?

Just got a bike back on the road after 8 years sitting idle. Changed the oil & filter, put new stuff in and within a couple of minutes of it running it's looking jet black in the sight glass.

My thoughts were that it's some of the old stuff that didnt come out contaminating it.

My plan was to leave it in for 100 miles and change it all again. Sensible? smile

Sounds likely, you would probably need to change the oil a couple of times if it bothers you.

You may find that more running clears it a bit as the new filter removes contamination.
