I am one of the BBers that likes scooters. I think it's a bit funny to mention the £69 a month without the £1000 deposit though.
Looks good, not sure if I'd buy one with no reason but I enjoyed my 250 much more than many other bikes. You don't have take it seriously, all I did was mess about on it, off roading, burnouts, skids and generally arsing about.

I'd suggest 5 good reasons why people in UK don't ride scooters:
1). 2 months good weather per year (if lucky).
2). They're built to accomodate a SE Asian sized person.
3). Most people can bearly manage a car safely on our roads.
4). We're just too paranoid about safety.
5). We all have too much (access to) money.
I've spent some time recently in Vietnam, where they make perfect sense (for the locals).
You'd be happier on a train I think..

I don't know where in the UK you live, but most people get more than 2 months good weather a year! And while the roads can be wet, living in London as I do, it's surprising how little you are actually rained on.1). 2 months good weather per year (if lucky).

I'm 6'4 and 18 stone and even I fit on an X Max
Riding a scooter or bike actually makes you a better/ safer/ more aware driver.
Yes you can get killed, but (in cities) more likely knocked off, and with the right kit it's no worse than falling off a push bike, indeed arguably much better given your protection. You clearly haven't been to London recently, or you go around with your eyes closed, because there is a huge number of cyclists now, and I actually think that is much more dangerous (with no evidence at all to back that up!!!).
Money has nothing to do with it.

Not nearly enough pain and suffering was unleashed on those sewer dwelling, scumbag pieces of st.
If they have the kahunas to ride round with no number plates doing what they like, there should be a legal exemption from any prosecution or responsibility for Chelsea Tractor drivers to flatten the little stbags.
Rant over.

The scoot looks cool by the way, big scoots have always been appealing to me.

Not sure why any biker would get ranty about these, surely any 2 wheels are better than 4?
Yes, 2 proper sized wheels though. Scooters are for feckwits and robbersGixer_fan said:

I live in Switzerland where people have even more access to money, are more paranoid about safety and the weather for a lot of the year is worse than the UK. However, scooters are everywhere because the roads are well surfaced and maintained, drivers tend to be pretty good at looking where they're going, and it's easy to get a license to ride a 125 - do an 8 hour course and you're there as long as you have a car license. Also, we don't have gangs of dicks trying to steal them all the time which helps a lot.1). 2 months good weather per year (if lucky).

We also have proper bikers, as well as scooterists, but a lot of people have a foot in both camps.I do agree that most scooter riders aren't actually interested in scooters though - they're bought based on brand, dealer proximity and performance/license category. Except Vespas of course, where people are happy to pay 300cc money for a slow 125cc bike

The Swiss may not steal many scooters, but they will happily rob from people or at least conceal the gains of nefarious activities, usually while dressed in an expensive suit, and sitting in a private bank in Zurich....I commuted for years in to the City of London, and I used 1,000cc sports bikes for the commute. The last bike was a 2005 R1 that I put 75,000 miles on it in 4 1/2 years. I then had a change of heart and sold all my bikes and biking gear and would never commute on a bike again.
Three years ago we moved away from a large town into the country and since then I have been using a Yamaha XMax 250 for the 6 miles to the train station, yes scoots are not proper bikes, and yes I hate them, but what it does, it does very well. In three years I've had one problem with the wiring loom which was fixed easily but apart from that it's done exactly what I've asked of it. It does 75mpg no matter how you ride it, it will also do 80mph and I can put my helmet and gloves and other bits under the seat and not worry about it. I keep looking at other bikes again and something like a CB 1000R or a FZ1, but I'm keeping the scoot because no one is interested in it, I can leave it where I like and it costs me more or less nothing to run.
Could I leave a CB1000R or FZ1 at the train station and not worry about it, probably not and that's why I have an Xmax 250.

I agree with the Professor - fking scooters are the work of satan himself They're just not proper 'bikes', & well, look just a bit gay to me. There is talk of 'great weather protection'. bks - if you commute any distance, you'll get fking wet whatever you're riding. Oh, & you can't pull proper mingers, decent burnouts, stoppies, etc, & you DEFINITELY will not look cool.
For tts.
Whilst burnouts etc are obviously of maximum value to me on my 6 mile London commute, i still, after years of being fked in the arse by Southern Rail, bought a big scooter a few weeks ago, instead of a proper bike. I gave the same sort of consideration to this purchase as i did to a fridge or washing machine. For tts.
i can't believe i didn't do it years ago. Commuting is stress free, i save 40 minutes a day and it costs less than the daemonic torture device that is the London commuter train. I do have garage at home and work, and changing rooms in the office, so i will admit it makes more sense to me than for many people.
Tend to agree though. These machines aren't exactly PH.
