BMW have an inline-4 for the top end sports bike, but retain their traditional boxer twin in much of their range. I would imagine Ducati will keep making V-twin bikes, but have a V4 for headline grabbing and superbike racing.

Ok not EBR but from memory they bought 'Buell' around 2002/03/04 ?

Presumably you get my point.
Harley bought the final 49% of Buell in 1996.

Ducati have previous on V4 engines. Apollo, anyone?

And the V4 will add £5k to the price, I reckon.

Is moving to a V4 just not the story going full circle?

Is the current V-twin not based on half of the Apollo V4 engine from 1964?

No. The Apollo was a pushrod engine. If anything it was intended as a rival to the Harley Duo Glide, particularly in the law enforcement market.
The original bevel-driven OHC V-twins were based on the desmo and valve-spring singles.
The belt-driven OHC desmos were based on the air-cooled Pantah 500 for many years, but I think that link has been very tenuous for a long time now.

+1
I´d be sad to see the demise of the V-twin - I think it´s the perfect motorcycle engine...

Ducati V4 Road Bike = Desmosedici RR

..the new V4 has something to live up to.

Spoke to my dealer yesterday and have put a deposit down on the new road bike (1299 RHE or whatever it is called). Roll on 7th July biggrin

Finally, I've been scrolling through all the comments hoping that SOMEONE would have the sense to mention the awesome desmosedici (thank you!)

And Aprillia seem to be doing fine with their Tuono V4 and RSV4 models !

Bad news for the purists but good news for the collectors maybe?

Either way, I was thinking it was just a matter of time until Ducati ditched the twin for their flagship model. Aprilia did it back in 2010 when they intro'd the RSV4.

I can't help but think could the timing of this announcement have anything to do with the current MotoGP success of the Desmo GP bike (V4)? Bit of a premature: win on Sunday, sell on Monday.

I rode the 959 and the 1299S around Silverstone last year (albeit at about 40% of their capability, may I add!) and I did really enjoy the feel of the twin. But I can't say I liked it any more or less than my GSXR6 I had at the time. There is something quite epic about the sound of an inline 4 at 16500 rpm but the surge from the L twin was equally as addictive biggrin

A move to V4 in the Panigale would still interest me as a buyer, despite the brand's heritage. Then again, I like hybrid tech in performance cars and flappy paddle gearboxes - a side effect of growing up in the Playstation generation, I guess!

Aprillia didn't have much history with a v twin though , in fact it wasn't even their engine it being a rotax unit .

I believe the phrase is 'haters keep hating' or some such like, but I'm looking forward to adding it to the line up......

Not a hater at all, I just found the looks of the one on the left, erm, "challenging" to say the least, as in, looks which only a mother could love. But if you like it and want it then fair play to you; as everyone always says, wouldn't be much good if we all liked the same thing.

The one on the left is the race bike that the colour scheme the road bike has is based on...

Looks awesome IMO.

Yep - the race bike is a little function-over-form, but the road bike is a peach biggrin

Devastating news.
Maybe they could raise a few quid selling off the manufacturing rights to China, India, Thailand.
The Gulf States have loads of money they struggle to squander. Possibly a small factory might manufacture another ostentatious vanity project? Other vastly wealthy remote countries could be attracted to ghost more V Twins..

What is the functional difference on the road between the 1199 you already have, and the 1299 FE?

There's about 100 bikes out there that are "premium" in the way I presume you need a bike to be, that would provide as thrilling a riding experience as the 1299, but are different enough from your 11 so as not to be boring (KTM Superduke, Aprilia RSV4/Tuono, et al.). Anyway, horses for courses and all that. I just find the new-to-biking public's affection toward Ducati perplexing I suppose

I'd LOVE one of the FEs, but fear it will be out of my price range! Any idea on price? £25k-£30k or is that wishful thinking.

I love V twins and have a few in the collection, (mille Edwards, TLR, SP2 and 996), but no Panigale yet and was waiting til a "significant birthday" to get one! But I think that looks the badgers nads!

Sell all the others and buy it.......?) not sure I could!

Having said all that, I wish it had the race tank on it!
