OP tomorrow:

Like I said before, whole thing comes off the bike to work on the bench - this bloke hasn't got a bench.

Found this while googling parts diagram, fear we'll never hear from OP again:

The poor bloke only came on for some advise about his pride and joy and has been ridiculed , probably last seen in tears throwing the poor thing in the canal biggrin

Graham22 was correct. There's been a lot of progress this afternoon..

Single sided swingarm...just like the Monster smile

Everything came off easily thankfully. The bike's only had one other owner and I think it might have been quite well looked after.

I need to remove that plastic fan thing but the screws are not turning at present. I've doused them with WD40 and will try again tomorrow.

Whats the best thing to clean all the engine bits with, petrol?

Get in there!

I like a man who dives in head first without really knowing what he's doing!

Stuff your bloody Ikea pictograms and cartoon instructions, get the big hammer and the mole-grips out!

This takes me back to my yoof hood. Bench and book.

It's the only way to learn, I think I stripped my Suzuki GS250 down 3 times, with some bolts left over now and then ;-(

But lovely colour, basket at the front is a bit ........... you now what I mean. However I would rather see the basket than men in full leathers on foldup mopeds!!

Happy I was wrong about the exhaust - good sign of things that it appears to have come away ok.

Cool thread!

First ever shag AND bike crash was on one of these; went out to meet a really fat bird I'd met on CB radio down a country lane near my house when I was 14. She was 23. She had arrived on her Yamahahaha Passolo and I ended up doing her over the seat. Afterwards I blagged a go on it and promptly stuffed it into a wall. The front mudguard was gone and the basket was all bent. A sort of post-coital moped crash.

I later found out she lived with this massive skinhead football hooligan who was not best pleased that she'd bent the "family" transport (obviously she couldn't explain how it really happened).

This really should be in the council thread.

Great thread title.

In the late 70s I made the mistake of buying a Gilera 50cc. It was shyte, but I, in my adolescent search for personal freedom, thought it was brilliant. At the end of the second week I took it to the old RAF camp for some serious trialling. did a jump over a short plank, landed front wheel first because the bike was too slow to actually take off, forks folded and I went over the bars tearing my ballsack open. Bike only cost me £50 anyway.

biggrin I too had my first kinda bike crash on one of these, my auntie had one and used to tow me around on my roller skates with it! We got up to near top whack one day on it, the skate wheels went into what I know now to be a speed wobble, my legs went in either direction and I ended up with skinned knees and a mass of bruises...That was out the back of our old council estate...happy days!

Keep us updated with progress OP.

Oil seals, gasket set and front pads turned up today. The last ride revealed that the front brake was pretty useless. The rear one worked really well.

I also thought the rear was really bouncy on the current spring/shock absorber. I assume that things have moved on in this regard since the 80's so might look at swapping it. Don't want to....ahem....ruin the handling though. Advice gratefully received. Will obviously keep the original so it can be swapped back when prices for these start rising rofl

The top of the piston is rough and black, so I believe I need to clean that up. There seems to be very little gap between the piston and cylinder, a minute amount of side to side movement.

Still can't release these 3 screws holding the plastic fan on. Off to get some better penetrating/releasing oil.

Doh...Thought that may cause a bit of damage, but it didn't and now the dismantling can continue.

Apparently this thing has 2 clutches. The rear one look worn out to me and I can't find a replacement anywhere.
