It's all hype to sell more tickets. If he does ride then it's a daft move and potentially career ending even with the most minor off.
Blooming risky isn't it? It's not like he's in the title fight anyone is it, so I don't know why he's rushing back when he isn't going to be 100%.
These guys are different, a bit mental even, but they eat, sleep and breathe racing. Rossi is approaching this no differently to the others, Cal with a severed tendon in his finger, Lorenzo having surgery on a broken collarbone and 12 hours later qualifying at Assen, Pedrosa racing 3 weeks after smashing his collarbone in 4 places and breaking his fibula to name a few

As has been said above, there's more to it than being out of the title fight (although as unlikely as it is, a DNF from Marc/Dovi does put things close again).

He would want the development of the bike to go in the right direction, ready for a strong 2018.
He would also want to try and finish as high up in the championship as possible, and potentially beat his teammate.

As long as he passes the track medical? I think he'll race even if he just comes away with some points which will be easily achievable on his bike.

As above. these guys are not daft and have a lot of backup/medical stuff and won't be allowed on or put their career at risk just to sell tickets
he will come back when he feels he can. And the Doc's agree

It looks like he's turning up for FP1 and taking it from there

Fair play to him, not bad for an old'un

I'll be amazed if he rides, four sets of practice, one set of quali (he won't make it out of Q1) and then a race at a pretty physically demanding circuit is too much of an ask IMO. I'd rather he recuperated properly and came back fit for the last few races, rather than rush it and end up in a worse position and potentially buggering up next season.

Ha ha to the post above. IIRC the last time he broke his leg they said on the television he had to jump off the pit wall and land on the injured leg to pass the track medical?

Anyone know if this is true? Feck that after 20ish days!

I doubt it was from pitwall but there's certainly a jump test to pass

Once upon a time, there might have been suspicions that a circuit doctor might have been intimidated into passing a rider fit just to help ticket sales, or at the behest of Dorna, a major team, or a big-money sponsor. But the FIM and Dorna have been working to dispel that impression by introducing standardized tests for riders with broken limbs.

For a broken lower limb (leg, ankle, foot), the assessment consists of four tests. Is there at least 50% of the normal range of motion in hip and knee joints? Can the rider stand on each leg alone for at least five seconds? Can they walk at least 20 meters in 15 seconds without any physical aids? And can they climb up and down 10 steps within 20 seconds?

Those tests don't sound too severe .... I'd probably be thinking 100 days though not 20.

Do I recall that Jorge had to perform chin ups when he did that collar bone break, operation, back to the circuit 24hrs later?

It was wet, Miller was 4th quickest, KTM sub Kallio 5th, Lowes 12th. Usual crazy mixed up session.

Just one of the reasons why Vale has so so many followers!

I admit to being one and its because you can never count him out.

Goat - maybe - but pointless title anyway - he is still up there with the kids though!
