Sorry for the delayed reply, I’ve been asleep most of the afternoon. Growing new bone is bloody tiring!

I’m “sort of” missing bone. There is actually new bone forming in the gap at the top, which is where they did a surgical break back in May, and since then I’ve been “winding” th middle bit down towards my knee. New bone cells regenerate in the gap at the top. No, I can’t really see much either, but my consultant assured me it’s all good!

In the original operation back in April, they did take out about 10cm of dead bone from above my knee, as well as most of the original internal plate, wire and pins. The “screw head” of one of the pins in the knee end of my femur was so badly stripped, they couldn’t get it out with the screwdriver, so it was left in situ, the consultant did say if they really needed to, they could get it out by digging away enough bone around the head of the screw to get pliers on to it and take it out that way, but the risk of damaging my knee outweighed the benefit of removal, so they left it where it was.

The X-ray is a couple of weeks old, so the gap at the bottom end is actually smaller and will be smaller still (by another 7-10mm) by the time I go in next Tuesday for the next operation.

You’re right. 8 should’ve edited out my squashed up balls.

My consultant is confident she will repair the femur to as good as new and all I’ll be left with are some fairly lengthy (hip to knee) scars on my right leg.

If this next operation doesn’t work, they start measuring me for a prosthetic femur. If tha5 doesn’t work, we start going a bit “Biker’s Nemesis” on the leg... as much as I like and respect you, BN, I’m hoping to avoid that!

My dad was out on this the other day. He really liked it but is waiting for the new model to release next year before he makes his mind up. I have told him not to trade his K1300S Anniversary model in without consulting me first.

Is there anything in the rumour mill about what KTM's changes will be this year?

I know they were talking about an adventure bike with the new 790 parallel twin.

I think it looks pretty cool in a way. It's a bit of a change for my dad who has come from two K1300S in a row. He was looking at an MV Augusta Turismo Velocé 800 tourer thing also. He's test rode a couple of those over recent years and is infatuated with the looks but has reservations over the lack of power and the dealer network.

It’s used to measure bone length. Bone. No “R”...

If you can bear to look past my bks, you’ll see the right hand side of my pelvis (left side as you look at the image) is actually lower down than the other side. This is even though I had plates under my right foot and it felt at the time like the right side of my pelvis is higher.

When it comes to how much shaving/stocking bits of bone in, they can measure on the X-ray down to 1/100th of a millimetre. For femurs, there are “notches” at the top and bottom of each bone, whic( they can use as datum sand compare one side to the other. I’m under quite strict instructions just how many turns of the fixator screws to do each day, so come Tuesday, there isn’t too much shortening or lengthening to do.

Once the “docking” (glueing it all together) is done, after a couple of days, I’ll have another of these X-rays and another comparative measurement will be taken there is some scope for some “fine adjustment” still with the fixator screws - it’s easier/more accurate to lengthen the “new” femur than shorten it.

Used to be! beer

Until 1997 I lived near Ryton (Tyneside) - rode up to Rothbury a few times - I thought the parking place looked familiar!
