Looking forward to the summer!
I think Rawwr has leathers that’s match that perfectly!

I was going through photos on an old Photobucket account and I came across this one of me from about ten years back, when I hired a bike for a couple of nights while out in Oz. I managed to come off on the last Ady and did about £600 worth of damage to the bike, but fortunately I was uninjured, apart from some minor bruising (and my pride!). It was the classic “look where you want to go, not at the side of the road”, because that was where I ended up.

The best part of the trip was the “Putty Road” from Windsor to Singleton, just north west of Sydney in NSW, over towards the Hunter Valley (huge wine producing area). The second best part was the miners’ pub in Singleton, complete with sticky carpet tiles, pole, the most bored looking stripper I imagine there’s ever been and a “piss trough” round the bar, so you didn’t need to leave the bar to go to the toilet... it really was an experience! We didn’t realise the kind of establishment we were walking into, even though we had an Aussie guy with us. It was very “Slaughtered Lamb from An American Werewolf in London” and we all thought we were going to get murdered to death. We (possibly naively and stupidly) brazened it out for a couple of beers, got chatting to some of the locals who actually seemed slightly impressed with what we were doing and had an absolutely belting night. I had possibly one of the top three worst hangovers of my entire life the next day, probably not helped by not very much sleep at the motel, which was next to a park full of screeching fruit bats the size of labradors. There was fruit bat guano EVERYWHERE and it absolutely stank! Happy days. smile

This is the Google maps link, it’s well worth a zoom in and a look about on street view:

https://goo.gl/maps/FLkXpQtw6XD7qZyi7

Here’s where I had my “off”:

I ended up in the “ditch” to the right. You can’t really tell, but it was about 18 inches deep. It was fine, until I hit a rock with my front wheel...

Photos on the Putty Road (I’m the fat fker on the left in the first pic):

Now this is what bikes are all about...adventures and memories. I just can't see you posting something like this had you picked up a hire car for a couple of days.

On this trip, we flew into Melbourne, had a hire car for the ten days or so we were there, then flew to Sydney to stay with friends and had a Subaru Forester for the few weeks we were there.

The hire car at Melbourne was a 2.0 Subaru Impreza “or equivalent”. I can tell you, a Nissan Ti’ida (think Micra, but with a boot) is in no way whatsoever “or equivalent” to anything other than a feeling of utter self contempt and undying shame. It was utterly, utterly hateful and completely ruined the Great Ocean Road for me. And Philip Island. and the Mornington Pensinsula. I’d rather have st in my own hands and clapped.

It was over ten years ago now and I still get angry thinking about it!

I share your pain!

I was on a business trip to Melbourne in 2010 and rented a car for the Easter weekend - and got an automatic 2.4i Camry. Not exactly what I would have chosen for the GOR. frown

But given the Oz approach to speeding (with fines doubled as a special treat on Public Holidays) maybe it's just as well. laugh

To anyone planning to go there for driving (or riding) fun, don't bother - it's just miserable!

+1

I was surprised I lasted 6 months without a ticket. Police and hidden cameras everywhere, and a lot of the nice roads down to 60kph rolleyes

It’s amazing when you get out into the sticks a bit and see the rubber left on country roads from burnouts/drifting!

Getting caught speeding wasn’t an issue with what we bought over there years ago. Even with the three speed column shift gearbox hehe

Got my bike back from HM. New STM clutch fitted, new exhaust, clock bracket, and a few other bits and pieces. Also new fairings. Highly recommend Spraybay for paintwork on them, they’ve done an awesome job.

Found a couple more from my old PhotoBucket account. My VFR by one of the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy, then setting off back home from Gout Rossignol (just south of Angouleme) in France, via the Caen - Portsmouth ferry, with my “sat nav”. That page is the complete directions for about 350 miles!

Went out this morning as Billy no mates, met an old mx mate who's gone to road bikes, road to another cafe then went home but the ride was a bit too chilled and I needed that 'buzz'

So went back out a couple hours later for a more enthusiastic ride on my own again

This guys gen2 was immaculate. He was 60 years old, had this, an rsv4 and a few others and still really had his heart into bikes. I hope if I'm still alive I'm like that
