Would have loved to had a nose at that John...fun somewhat got sucked out of it today regards the owner of the 500 being diagnosed with Covid-19 this afternoon...while we kept more than the 2m distance when he dropped it off, I cant remember if i pushed it into the garage wearing gloves or not...Really annoyed with him (he says now he was feeling fine but had a cough!) and myself for allowing my guard to slip after being indoors for 5 weeks and my other half/step daughter putting the effort in doing similar..Be glad when this week is gone now...
Christ Bryan I hope you did have your gloves on! Is your mate OK?
Checked in with him today John, says he has felt worse with a cold ...all OK my end to so far, another fine day to enjoy tinkering with the bikes...

Suppose I'll use it for a little while to pop to the shops and back on but after lockdown I'll flog it as 30mph in rural areas isn't much fun! hehe
Ring-a-ding! It looks like the earlier version of the Dio. You might be able to get a spanny for it and it might have just the mythical red wire you unplug to derestrict it. I had a Yamaha Jog in the mid 90's and the addition of a spanny (and rejet) plus the red wire trick really opened it up. The speedo only went up to 60kmh and the needle go right off the end and against the housing, and it was still acclerating. So I think it might have maxed out at near 80kmh. Plus it'd accelerate much more quickly. Obviously, quickly being a relative term here...!

So I pull the cylinder head cover off for a much needed valve clearance check, and sure enough a few need reshimming. I remove the cams, to find one of the tappets damaged:

Looking at the bottom it's actually cracked. Not happy about this obviously, so I perform a leakdown test to find that cylinder has a 40% drop.

Yup, that'll be why. Both inlet valves on that cylinder are bent. Can't see any other damage, or any reason why that would be the case. Timing was fine when I checked. Does look like the cylinder head could have been off before though - all the retainers have paint marks on them, there's some writing on the outside of the heads. Inlet ports look like they've seen some work too.

Valve clearance check has now become a slightly more expensive job...
What bike is that on? Lucky you caught it before it dropped a valve, and at least it will run lovely once it's back together thumbup

I've been buying st I don't need. I ordered 3 suits from sportsbikeshop to try on. I cant think of a more pleasant way of trying on a one piece suit at home, all the time in the world to make a good decision .

The other option is falling out a tiny changing room half naked into a shop full of people because you cant get it off, that and the fact the shop assistant is hanging about outside getting bored.

I decided on the rst v4.1 . For the money I really cant see anything that matches it, and it fits, bonus smile

2014 ZZR1400.

Lockdown has proven good timing for both my bikes to be in pieces really, waiting for a replacement shifter rod for my ZX10R as the original cracked (common fault it turns out).

What else did you try? Why did you think the RST was better? I'm thinking about getting a new 2-piece suit, having lost 15kg since I last bought a set.

Its not better, its the fit that counts with a one piece and the suit your happy with quality wise, I have a dainese one piece already but its to big for me now.

Quality wise and fit for me the rst just works. There v4.1 is kangaroo leather and has some nice features. For the price i don't think you can get anywhere near this spec from the Italian brands. Your 2 piece is going to be a different beast, good luck and just try a few see what fits best for your budget.

My mate restored this 1960 600 Dominator for the son of its owner, whose owned it since 1962. Today is his 80th birthday, and the son wanted to give it back to his dad today. Sadly the lockdown means it'll have to wait. BTW the oil drip is from the kickstart oil seal, the gearbox being the one part my mate was told didn't need any work, as it had already been rebuilt..

Had to pull the old Maico out today just to hear it. So much compression, so noisy and the smell. I'm ready to play on these now

Since the sun was out, decided to give the MT09 a service...

Also removed the ‘amazing’ Chinesium chain adjusters and went back to the standard style - but changed to titanium fixings.

not much else to add, nice way to spend a few hours in the sun.

Context;

500's of that era made circa 52 bhp like the Maico 490, YZ 490 etc.
The bike that made the biggest impression on me ever was my best mate's brothers CR 500 national Spec. Andy rode with the likes of Dave Thorpe et al and riding his bike at Canada Heights terrified the bejeezas outta me, still to this day I giggle at the terror I felt at the time when it came on the pipe and roostered me up the hill. It was stupendously epicly pant fillingly scary and exhilarating at the same time.

Fast forward to today, any 250 2T has nearly 50 bhp and is as scary as a basket of kittens.

But nothing can emulate the sound of a big aircooled 2T.

Fair play Birky, lovely LOVELY bit of kit thumbup
