looks like my insurance is going through on the stolen GS and was thinking about going for an RS.

Anybody have one? Ridden one?

have a test ride Monday and just want some opinions, may also try a VFR1200.....

Had mine 14 months now. Done 6000 miles on it including a winter tour to Murcia Last December. The bike is great. It has some minor flaws but overall I think it is epic.

Flaws are minor.

1. Dash is not easy to read some of the little parts. Buy a Nav 6 and it has lots of info.

2. Nav cradle is a bit low. Buy a bracket from some German lot whose name I forgot and get it up where it is on a GS

3. No wind protection for your hands

4. Screen is a compromise. Too high a d it buffets. Too low and you get a cold chest.

5. I keep it in Dynamic suspension as I am a lard arse but sometimes that's too hard

6. You can drag the main stand easily if you have it too soft

7. Luggage is an odd shape and side loads so inner bags are a must.

8. These are all tiny things and I had to think hard to come up with them. Overall I can live with them all.

I have a 200 bhp superbike that hardly comes out to play now as the BMW is a great all rounder.

thanks Chipchap,

The no wind protection on the hands worries me.....i ride all year round and found the GS hand guards useless so no protection could be an issue.

Powerbronze make effective Shields that do a good job but with bar risers they are less effective. People have adapted proper hand guards. These allied to the heated Grips should sort it.

I've always though a RS would be more suited for 99% of GS owners. Seeing you're coming from a GS would be interested to hear your thoughts.

Again thoughts on the VFR1200 would be good, used ones are getting quite affordable now.

I've got an R1200 sport on a loaner whilst mine is in for a service at the moment and I have to say it's a very competent motorcycle.

Light, good suspension, good brakes, lovely torquey engine and a low seat hight which makes it good for paddling around traffic. Being the R version instead of the RS it's only down fall is complete lack of wind protection which means it's handicapped for touring in my book.

Wouldn't swap it for the XR as it doesn't have the loony exciting bit but a good bit of kit all the same. I'd definitely have one over the R9T if I wanted the naked bit even though it's not as pretty. And I'd take the RS over a GS as like 99% of GS owners I'd never take a £15k 200 odd kilo bike off road.

For me I'd want a set of R more upright bars on an RS or an RS fairing on an R.

And agree with the post above, the dash is ste. Way to much information going on. I suppose I'd get used to it but at one point I had to stop and put my specs on to turn the heated grips off.

Was it like this, took a pic of the dash on the loaner I had as it was gash, nothing immediately intuitive especially coming from a R with analogue tacho/digi speedo.

Yep, that's the one. Looks a lot worse in real life as well when you're 2ft further away from it in varying light conditions Tacho is next to useless as is fuel gauge. Speedo is bloody awful when approaching speed cameras as well.Gone are the days when a rough speed is OK. Now the difference between 30 and 35 mph can mean a fine and points.

There's enough room in the unit itself to double the size of the actual info screen. Which would make things a lot easier. Bet it was cheap to manufacture though.

you can change the dash read out to show digital speed.

only trouble is you then lose the revcounter but arguably with these torquey low down engines its not about revs anyway

apart from that am loving my R

particularly the way it pops and farts when you use the quickshifter to shift down say 3-2-1 on the approach to a red light. It adds amusement to a v dull commute
