Hi all,

Deposit is down on my first bike and a gear bundle is being included as part of the deal. The decision came down to two bikes from two different dealerships, offering different gear. I've made my decision based on the bike, but want to know whether the gear is any good. This will also help me work out if the overall price is right considering this element of the package.

The one I've decided to go with claims the gear they are offering is much better, but I'm sceptical. Also, I have found the jacket they're including - which they quoted to me at 149 quid, is on their site for 52! This suggests it is st and that I maybe ought to push them harder on the overall package price. If they are claiming there's a discount of 300, when in fact it is more like 0, then I'm basically being ripped off.

So could you guys please comment on the two bundles being offered? Any items that are total crap? And does one bundle stand out as being better than the other? The prices shown do not include the discount they say they've applied - but what they told me in an email they are worth.

A)

RST Thundra jacket £149.99

RST Blade Trousers RRP £109.99

Alpinetsars SMX 3 boots RRP £169.99

Alpinestars Transition WP gloves RRP £54.99

HJC IS-17 Helmet RRP £149.99

Oxford Boss lock RRP £99.99

B)

Oxford Montreal 2.0 MS Jacket

Oxford Montreal Trousers

Merlin Aragon Boots

Richa Sonar GTX Gloves

HJC IS-17 Helmet

Oxford Boss lock

Thanks guys

Same as above I wouldn’t choose either bundle but A seems the better one. I would expect that they are both offering some items that they want to clear from stock so yes they might be reduced in a sale.

Thanks for the responses. The thing is, the coat in list A looks st and is 52 quid. Is it better than the Oxford coat?

What parts of List A are preferable?

Deal B is junk.

Deal A is ok, but why not just get them to offer you credit towards kit and decide on your own.

Buy the stuff that fits properly - not just what is being offered.

I’d go A too but the equivalent credit and chose what you like is a good shout.

Just because something is cheap doesn’t mean it’s rubbish. I’ve had a £60 Hein Gerike textile jacket for years which has been great all round.

There is nothing on either list I would buy out of choice, if I were in the same situation I’d rather have a bit more off the bike or cashback if you’re financing it.

Hmmm.

For your first set of kit, the only thing I would buy brand new is the helmet; everything else I would buy barely used from gumtree or ebay.

Every summer Hundreds of people think they are going to become bikers, spend hundreds on the kit, hate their CBT and never want to get on a bike ever again; buy their kit and save yourself a fortune.

In the meantime, enjoy your new bike.

I only bought proper kit (other than the helmet which I bought new for training) once I'd got my license and first big bike. I paid for it trying to take my first practical test in storm conditions towards the end of 1996 and got truly soaked for the test to be cancelled having ridden to the test centre lol

^ This.

While there is nothing specifically wrong with the kit bundles on offer, I'd buy nearly new, good quality second hand kit. I expect that, for the same money, you'll be able to find quality name branded Gore-Tex kit that will keep you warmer and drier, will last longer and will likely offer better protection in the event of an accident.
