Not 100% on this but I think you need to pass your CBT on geared bike to ride a geared bike at the age of 16. At the same time, once they turn 17 they can automatically ride a geared bike. Quite baffling really.

Personally I'd say twist and go is much safer to ride on and get used to the road rules as a youngster rather than having to shift through a silly amount of gears and concentrate on the road.
No you don't. You can obtain a CBT on an automatic and then ride a manual down a dual carriageway ten minutes later, legally. Common sense is that would be utterly stupid and you should take your CBT on the type of bike you plan to ride. Obviously. any school worth there salt would advise against going out and buying a geared bike if you passed in a twist and go.

Just looking at the License Requirements page. New to me but it now seems you have to do the theory test as well as the CBT. Thats a new one. Not a bad thing really (providing you only have to do it once), as mentioned before though, I also think they should get rid of 50cc's and let 16 y/o on 125cc's.

https://www.gov.uk/ride-motorcycle-moped/bike-cate...
That's only for a full license though, you can do the CBT and ride without a theory test (although if your CBT is well-run the basics of not getting yourself killed at junctions and hazard perception will be taught). Not sure why any 16-18 year old would bother will either an AM or an A1 license when the CBT validates their provisional right to ride.

Different circumstances I suppose. My son is currently in the process of doing the MOD 1 & 2 (already passed the theory). He will have to renew his CBT next year anyway and financially it works out about the same (obviously if he passes first time and has zero lessons). Hopefully it will reduce his insurance premiums although I'm not expecting much on that but most importantly he can use the motorway. We'll be planning on the occasional lengthy ride out next summer (well, lengthy for us) so it'd just make life a lot easier if he could jump on the motorway.

Saying that. If he'd got into biking in 6 months time or as a 18 year old it probably wouldn't make sense to go through it all.

We had a chat about it all last night and decided that a relatively cheap 50cc is the way forward for all the reasons previously mentioned.

I also deep down know that he'll be wanting a 125 ASAP as he will be limited on the 50 as to how far he can safely venture

Getting overtaken in 30mph zones in the school run by Nissan Micra's will do that to you.

Went to local dealer today and the lad had a sit on few peds.

TBH the best cheap option is looking like a 50cc Sinnis new with 2yr warranty for £1100.

They are local so will deliver and the owner lives local so will collect the bike if any issues.
He can so do his CBT there.

Providing he doesn't wreck it they will take it in PX after a year or obviously we can try and sell it privately.

Peace of mind with the warranty suits as i cant be bothered with hassles and as the dealer lives local he can collect and deliver whenever necessary.

The Peugeots are nice but over twice the price

Sounds like a plan, can you get crash bungs for peds? hehe

It should be hassle free really with a warranty and whatnot, makes sense to me, you never know what you are getting with a used one, most have been run on an absolute shoestring budget.

I've told him he's likely to drop it but i guess the plastics can be replaced.

I'm now looking for a bike for me but don't wanna spend 6k on a KTM 690 so looking for cheaper Jap alternatives but not much that catches my eye

Hi m8 many tks .

No issue with the 600 just thinking of something a little more 'lethargic' to ride .

Mind you 2.5k is v tempting .

Can you possibly link me an example ?

Does 2.5k get you into a Honda CB500 (the new one)? Reasonably relaxed to ride but pretty good fun, and it’s A2 friendly so an be passed on to the sprog when he hits 18. I have the X version which has more weather protection, but is less cool for an 18 year old but it’s mechanically the same.

I had a 2010 Derbi GPR 50. Aprilia engine and majority of the components were Aprilia. Upside down forks, digital dash, 6 gears and definitely better than all of your mates bikes!

Also did 56mph (indicated) on flat ground, every mph matters with a 50cc.

The only comments I ever received were positive, parking it at West Bay on a summers day I got more attention from intrigued bikers with bigger machines than I thought possible! They couldn't believe it was a 50cc.

Finally, managed to buy mine for £1250 as the guy needed a quick sale, 2 years later I sold it for £1500. The only vehicle I've ever made money on!

Don't know how to post a photo so here's a link to mine...

Very cool looking machine that .

Sadly he's hooked on Peds but I've told him eventually he needs to learn to ride a geared bike . So much more fun

So I may have gone insane, but due to the lack of any parking at all at my work place I've just brought s 5yr old Yamaha 50cc to commute the 4miles to work on as I really don't want to leave my proper bike unattended in town.

Queue the histerics of you'll be immediately killed, but apart from one 250yd stretch of 40mph it's all 20s and 30s so I think I should be safe as a cyclist!

Something like this :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-CBR600F-1-2002-02...

It’s 600cc,a nice size, Honda build quality, seat is comfy for actual use. Well balanced bike to ride. People will probably give other suggestions on a bike for you in this sort of price bracket, but I’d wager no one will say a bad bike or a bad buy. This year also gives injection so less worries with regards carbs if your not up on motorcycle tinkering.

Also 21k is nothing on this engine, very well proven lump.

Alternatively if you fancy something smaller / more basic to be on, for the money the new KTM duke 390 is quite something. One cylinder and build quality is not amazing but a friend of mine got one brand new for 4.2k, it has a lot of neat features and is great fun to ride, plus if your son decides to move on to bigger bikes it’s the next step after 125’ s.

New barrel and head with different porting, new exhaust, new jetting and / or maybe a bigger carb. New rollers, derestrict the variator etc.

Some of the peds on the continent are insane, 20hp some are making, admittedly from a few more ccs. But you can get 8 or 9hp pretty easy from a 50, and that should be good for 55mph or so with matched gearing. At least it will keep up with traffic on the odd jaunt between villages.

70cc upgrade is cheap and available, but we want to keep it as a 50.
